|edit| OH IT DOES!!

Anyways, those are from a later session, probably around mid 1998. Two originals plus a Beatles cover. We were doing 2-3 gigs per week, got airplay on local radio (Hallam FM), and got to support Mansun on tour... then it all went tits-up. :/

It was awesome. The funny thing is, I was the first to quit. We were all young(ish) at the time, and two of us did all the graft while the other two... didn't. So there was always a divide Me/Richard, and Kev/Martin. One day we were meant to meet up at Kevs to go to a new rehearsal room. Me and Richard had to get all the way from work in Sheffield and we were late. They'd left a note on the door saying "find it yourselves, bastards".

That kind of set the mood for the evening. We did find the place ourselves, and there was an atmosphere. I was really pissed off, as we'd been left to shift all the gear, again. I carried the first of our four speakers in - a 3ft high one, and threw the fucker across the room. It was a church hall with a wood floor, and it went with a right fucking bang. Me and Kev had a right auld row and were on the brink of fistycuffs. I ended it with a "fuck it and fuck you, I'm off", and walked out. Who did I bump into on the way out? Fucking journalist from the local rag who we'd all completely forgotten was coming to do an interview.

Ended up going back in and carrying on like nowt had happened, but I dunno how much she'd heard from outside. If that journo hadn't turned up, I would have probly called it a day right there and then.

Few months later, Richard called us and said our PA had been stolen out of his house. But he didn't know how as there was no sign of a break-in. A few weeks before that I'd been at his place and seen letters saying he was over a grand in debt with the rent, then all of a sudden our entire PA disappeared, with him in charge of it. So we put two and two together.

I turned on him. The band split went from 50/50 to 75/25, and we sacked him. I was especially pissed as I'd been really close to him - he was almost like a brother and it all felt like a massive fucking betrayal. Long story short, we found another amazing guitarist, sorted a new PA, and a month or so later we all had a talk and let Richard back in. But this new guy said he felt like he was treading on people's toes, and he quit.

We did the Mansun gig 21st October 1998 - travelled down to Norwich in three cars, and Richard was last to arrive. He was late. He didn't arrive until five minutes after the gig had been due to start but by some miracle they changed the start time by 15 minutes. So we got set up and played our set with minutes to spare.

We did another gig ten days later at some Halloween party thing, and the organisers decided they wanted us to fit our set into 45 minutes. We normally did at least 90 minutes to two hours. With cracks already showing, I flipped and said I wasn't going to fuck about setting all the gear up for a 45 minute set. Kev had a quiet word with the organisers and persuaded them to stretch it to an hour, so I did the gig under protest, and swore it would be the last.

And it was the last, til 2007. Kev was in a new band and they needed someone on bass, so he came to me. I didn't need asking twice - I'd been in other bands over the ten years between and it had never been as good. Kev could be a nob when he wanted but he was a good lad and kept things organised.

We did it all again for about six months, then out of the blue, Kev announced he was emigrating to the Arab Emirates. His "day job" had always been in the building trade so he was buggering off to the land of opportunity. I was fucking gutted. The band was going great - we all got along really well and it just "worked". We played our last gig in November 2007 in one of our locals, and it was probably the best gig we ever played. I tried to carry on with the band but it didn't feel right any more. I left, and have barely picked a guitar up from that day to this.

Ha, I doubt it! Was offered to join a band last year - turned it down.

I just don't have the stamina for that sort of shenanigans any more.

Wow! The ups and downs of a rockstar - a great read

Shame that you let such a passion go to waste; you really were too good to let it just go like that.

good story! I was once eyeing up a career as a bassist, nothing anywhere near as serious as you guys but we had some gigs lined up until my ex put her boot in, long story short I fell out with the creative force of the band and left.

We played my mum and dads 30th wedding anniversary party and had requests come from that including a wedding.

the best part?

Good read... Shame it never took off!

My musical career basically was me playing the cornet in the Langley Park Colliery band as a kid, marched the Durham Gala twice, discovered Merrydown cider and an appreciation of the female frame... And that was it, cornet, gone!

Band I started 17 years ago, post-Restricted Area, and left due to being married to the manipulative, self-centered lying bitch from hell, are now playing on Spotify.

They do a very good cover version of Gary Numan's "Cars"...

...and a nice 360° video covering The Beatles' "Helter Skelter"
