Just bought this...

My PC has been shutting down on occasions recently, and, well, it's on its way out I think, it's done okay and everything in there was Ebay'd, lol... Apart from the SSD... So, decided it's time for a new one:-

www.debenhamsplus.com/p/1150740/asus-rog-g11cd-uk037t-core-i5-6400-8gb-1tb-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-dvd-rw-windows-10-gaming-desktop

I think that's alright for £850 dont you think?

Will probably plop some more RAM in there later on down the line, but for now, 8gig will be fine!

I'll probably sell some of the guts in my PC on Ebay, see what I can get back from that, even if I get 100 quid, then it's something!

Anyway, I get it tomorrow! \o/

Can you salvage your previous ram?

Not sure yet, my PC has 4x4gig DDR3, and, I think that one is a mini form factor, so, I'm not quite sure how many slots the MB will have on it, if its just two, and just the one is used, fair do's, I can stick an extra stick in (I cannot see no real difference between DDR3 and DDR 4) for now if I wanted, but, then, I'm in no rush for more then 8gig of the stuff so I'll probably just offhire them from my old setup and eventually get some fatter stuff in there later...

AKA, when I'm running about with an oculus rift on my noggin because that itch will probably come along too!

Looks like a good system for the price. (1070!) Though the processor is only 4 cores right? This year the switch to more cores was started by amd and intel. I do not know what this is going to mean for the future(games/apps)

Only one year warranty also? Over here the law requires 2 years. Not that I ever needed it(so far)

There are 6 core processors for the 1151 socket, so there's an upgrade there if needed, so thats canny!

Well, this being the land of the scam, we do theoretically get 2 years, based on an EU directive (1999/44/EC), which many retailers abide too if pushed... So what this states really is if a product is defective within the two years of the sale, it needs to be fixed/replaced.

My iMac super drive conked out about a week after the one years warranty on it ended (Only used it 7 times, lol, bless it), but I never had AppleCare, and on top of having it to lug the thing 15 miles to the Metro Centre in the car, then carry it through a massive shopping centre, then paying a fortune for the pleasure... I just ordered a external DVD-ROM drive off the internet instead.

Then, I discovered that directive thingy, and though and behold, even Apple were abiding by it, and not just abiding either, they had to put it on their website somewhere... But alas, it was a over two years when I discovered that.

But heres the thing... Manufacturers and retailers know about this directive, and you do actually get 2 years warranty, yet, they still advertise 1 years warranty, in the hope of duping not in the know customers into buying extended warranties... Wankers!

And when Brexit happens, I guessing it will be kept in the Great Repeal Bill, so we're still covered!

Spied an email with a "Track My Order"... Excited... I looked... Excitement quickly extinguished...

Your package will be delivered today between 0800 and 2200

Well, erm, thanks for that Mr Delivery company people, I'd be lost without that sort of information, and there's me, hoping to get a decent idea so I can, you know, do stuff on my day off... How selfish am I?

It's all good!

Worst thing with DPD is when you get the dreaded "your driver has been delayed" email. Our stock arrives via DPD and it's happened a few times now. One time, the order arrived later that day in the back of a taxi, driven by a Sikh who barely spoke English and had trouble finding our house. When he got the box out it looked like it had literally fell off the back of a lorry - smashed to fecking bits!

Luckily it was only t-shirts and stuff and everything in it survived and... I'm not helping matters, am I? :/

To give something positive to your plight, when DPD give a 1-hour slot they're almost always here within the first ten minutes of it.

|edit| actually not a bad price, that. Just having a sniff around and you'd pay nearly £400 just for the GTX1070.

I'm sure there's a legitimate reason for it.

Right, we're in... I'm keen to do a little benchmark, so I'll do that next, then I'm going to install my SSD, hopefully my Windows 10 key will be tied to my motherboard, so, reinstalling on the SSD will be a breeze!

All good so far!

I was quite pleased with the graphics of the 1050 on the two new laptops. I went to this from a 740m. I suddenly could see all kinds of new lighting effects in games.

Should last you a few years

Could you have built it yourself any cheaper?
Tue, 24 Oct 2017, 15:34
GfK
From what I've seen, it's unlikely the saving, if any, would be worth it. The GPU is about £380, £150 for the CPU. So we're well over £500 already. Companies buy in components in bulk so cheap now that it isn't really worth the hassle doing a self-build any more.

Saying that, I built my own. But that's only because I knew exactly what I wanted it to have - but just the Corsair Obsidian 750 case and Corsair RM850 PSU made any possibility of buying it ready-made almost impossible.

Liquid-cooled i7-4790K @ 4GHz (the stock cooler was crap)
Corsair RM850 modular PSU
4 x 8GB RAM
GTX 970 4GB (toyed with the 980 but not enough performance advantage for double the price)
512GB SSD + 1TB WD Blue

It does all the shit I need it to do, and it isn't breaking it's back to do it.

Yeah, I think it was a nice mark up for the price, so it's been nice just to get it, plug it in and switch it straight on!
