If you were using flat colours rather than a border you could have used the faux column technique: (Linkage)
if its a fixed width I guess you could cheat a little and have a wrapper with your two columns in it using the faux column tutorial described in *snip*

you are also missing a doctype, this is important as it will let the browser know to what standard you are coding to, without it the browser will be set to quirks mode which could cause a lot of problems with viewing your site.
As well as w3c which is a g*snip*
