Socoder -> Question of the Day -> QOTD : Asking for help

Nice little multipart question, today..

How often do you ask for help, vs how often you feel you probably should?
Do you ever feel like a question is too dumb to ask, and so never ask it?
What's the dumbest answer you ever got?

I feel like i should ask more, but have a personal stigma that drives me to figure it out until i'm absolutely sure i'm near insanity trying to solve a problem.

As for a stupid answer, I've had someone reply with 'I don't know' before, which i found to be either trollish, or just mentally rotten. Either way, it was pretty rage inducing.

I should probably ask a little less, As I am reasonably lazy. As for stupid answers, "I don't know" seems to happen quite often, also, people suggesting something that has nothing to do with the initial question.

Two things I don't like happening when I ask questions. First answering them myself before anyone else finds an answer. It feels like I'm calling over the community for help, only to dismiss them at the first chance.

Second to ask really obscure or difficult questions which won't get answered. That feels like no one is listening.

Plus tbh I'm usually in the mindset that doing some Google searching will find the answer quicker then asking.

Every time I get stuck on a little bump, I, out of habit, pop over to the mudchat. XD

I usually ask questions when I'm stumped on something. I think I try to answer my own questions as often as I can, usually with Google. But sometimes you don't get any good results, even trying different searches, and sometimes you don't know what you're looking for to begin with (like, are there any libraries to handle joypads?).

I think I ask for help as much as I should, not too much or too little. The hard part is sometimes finding a suitable place to ask the question. The answers I don't like are when people think you should be using other tools entirely. Like asking a question about MySQL and someone replies "Why aren't you using PostGre?". I mean, if I wanted to use another tool, I'd ask about it.

Yeah, I hate that- I ask someone how to do something with PHP, and they just tell me PHP is stupid and that I should be using ASP or something.
