Jesus... submitting games to Steam is a right fucking clart!

Haven't heard the word Clart before.. but, Yeah, I'm glad I'm still a homebrew kinda guy!!!

Clart = something that's unnecessarily difficult.

All your uploading is done with scripts, which you have to edit yourself; An App script, then one for each Depot. A depot is basically a bunch of files so you have a 'base' depot which has got all your graphics and shit in, then a separate one for each language (for example) which just has the changed files in. All of that is executed via a .bat file, which you also have to edit yourself.

Then in the Steamworks site there's about a bazillion options you have to set up, uploading images in about 8 different sizes, screenshots, videos, localised descriptions..... I mean for fucks sake! If I hadn't signed up to it with £79 I'd have given up.

It's a proper fanny on and no mistake.

Also clart = shit, "You'll get up to your knees in clarts..." etc.

I thought even the pretend southern 'north' used that word

Well, if you make one or a few tens of thousands then it would sure be worth it

Sounds as much a pain in the arse as iOS uploading.

... and, no, it wasn't bloody worth it!!

If i make more than £150 I'll call it a win. Bought Vegas Movie Studio to do a proper job on the promo trailers, so that and the app fee back, we're good! The rest is gravy.

To be fair.... It's still easier than iOS.

After a single game on iOS I gave up. It really wasn't worth the hassle. I kept the dev account for a couple of years, but never wanted to go through XTool, the certifications and signing processes ever again. Or use a Mac or OSX. Bleurggh!

Admittedly I was probably spoiled by the whole webOS thing - compile from pc straight to device (without any software in between) test and upload binary and some screenies to their portal add some text and a vid if required. Job done. And all for free. The HP fucked it all up.

If you could just put your game on iOS, and leave it there - fine. It made a little bit - quite a bit more than the annual fee.

But when they update the OS and *that* breaks everything, they put the onus on the developer to sort it out. The profit margin then doesn't seem worth the aggravation and pissing about, when it's going to take me two or three days to bugger about with Xcode and certificates and God knows what else. That's two or three days I could have been doing more important stuff.

I'm down to 3 apps in the AppStore.
From about 16, this time last year.

I refuse to do "updates" which are simply "I hit the recompile button on it because they fucking changed the rules again."
.. that's literally all they wanted. And a reupload, and all that that entails

Fuck that.
It ain't damn well worth it..

Look at all the fun you are having!

It could be worse and that you had to go thru the GreenLight process as well as the Steamworks crap!

The biggest thing that pissed me off about Xcode is the bit where you have to add in the same icon in about 27 different sizes. And they're all fucking stupid sizes like 27x27, 31x31, 33x33, 39x39 - WTAF??

Just take the biggest icon and derive the rest from it. Jesus!!

It could be worse and that you had to go thru the GreenLight process as well as the Steamworks crap!

Yeah I would never have bothered with Greenlight in a million years. Much rather just pay the ransom, upload my shit, job done. Ain't got time for lotteries.

I think (!!?) I now have about 85 games on OUYA/Razer ForgetV.
It hasn't cost me a penny.
It doesn't cost players a penny.
I make nothing back, but fuck have I had fun doing it.

... profit would be nice. But I'm happy.

What game(s) are you putting on Steam? Crime Solitaire 2?
Tue, 04 Jul 2017, 17:27

Yeah, just that for now, and just the PC version. My Mac hasn't been switched on in about two years and there'll be a shit-ton of updates and faffing about and I just couldn't be bothered with it.

LOL. I turned my MacMini on about a week ago, with the intention of a "quick compile test"

... didn't happen..

Good luck with it! I havent bothered with Mac versions on Steam (nor Linux) as the markets are just too small to bother trying to get Steamworks working with it.

Well that makes me feel a bit better about just not being arsed to do it.

Where did you get Vegas Movie Studio from? As its currently on special on Steam with 60% off...

Bloody would be, wouldn't it? Bought it from Magix.

|edit| Turns out, the version I have isn't actually on Steam. I have Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum which includes Movie Studio, DVD Architect, and a bunch of other stuff I haven't even looked at yet. Some of the Steam reviews talk about missing features (MP4 support, for example), which mine has. So, I don't feel ripped off any more. Vegas, to me, is still the dog's bollocks of video editing.

I actually packed my MacMini away in May 2016. I hadn't turned it on since I updated the OS to Mavericks (IIRC) and it broke my paid for version of Parallels - meaning Windows stuffage no longer worked. FFS.

I'm not sure it would even be usable for iOS stuff now, due to deliberate obfuscation on Apple's part.

Yeah i think my iMac is a 2010 or 2011 one and I don't even know how it'd fare with the latest version of OSX. I think it's got Mavericks on there atm.

To be fair... learning curve aside, it was all relatively painless. And we have a release date!
