Search For A Server 2017!

What's the general pick of the litter as far as servers go, lately?

I try doing websearches for "top 10 hosts" and things, but it's blindingly obvious that EVERY FUCKING ONE has been created by "the BEST!" simply to advertise themselves.
Fucking rediculous!

Thoughts/comments/suggestions?

Depends on your budget and requirements really.

I mean, United Hosting are really nice, best server I've used thus far. But probably a bit pricey compared to most.

Are you after a dedicated server, dya need cPanel, etc, etc. The worst thing about server migration is that no two servers are alike, i remember having to migrate ~300 over a few years ago. fun stuff.....

I'm not too fussy on specs, as long as it can run the important things.
PhP 5 or 7 should be fine, since the recent rewrite allows for either.
MySQL is obvious.
But both of those are near enough standards, really.

I trust it needs to be dedicated yup?

I guess that depends on how good the shared server is.
SoCoder doesn't actually need too much. But I've also got all of AGameAWeek on here, too, so it soon adds up!!

Meh... just go with shared hosting on hostgator then. Unlimited bandwidth and storage. Plus with shared hosting you don't need concern yourself with all the low level server shit.

I have the second-lowest package... think I upgraded cos the lowest one had a subdomain limit or something.

Yeah, that's currently one of my "I should at least test it" choices. The upper one also apparently comes with an SSL certificate, which may very well result in 95% less hair pulling.
Although whether that's a server-wide SSL or just for the Domain you sign up with, I'm not sure.

Still looking!!

Yeah you can pay monthly to test the water, then when you're happy just email em and ask them to invoice you a year in advance - works out a couple of $$ cheaper that way.

If you have some sort of sales/commision thing, I'd gladly give you that opportunity, but I'm not one to expect a discount. Never have been. I pay what oughta be paid normally!

Is that cos you look at networks and go "cor!"?

Seriously tho, when I first got broadband I was with Zen. Never a problem with them, speed was always as expected. Don't remember ever needing customer services.

I only left them because a lot of LLU operators joined our exchange and ended up making Zen look expensive by comparison.

I fix and maintain the network as a whole, today is the start of my week on call. I get called, day or night if stuff breaks

Don't go with hostgator. I was with them in my early years and the number of outages and lack of support was a bloody shambles.

Gawd, I forgot how shit Wordpress is at moving..

Download ALL the files, download the SQL database, upload all the files, upload the SQL.
.. 5% of the job complete!
Now I need only redo all the sodding menus and widgets and plugins and themes..

Oh yeah.. Wonderful job, Wordpress. :\
Meanwhile a basic form of my Game Archive is "visible", although it all still links back to the domain, so nothing really works right.
But the download speeds (for me, at least) are drastically improved.

Anyhoo, seems like I'm going with Zen, after all.

A test file
The Platdude Pixelart Desktop Collection is 18Mb.
Having uploaded it to the new server, I then set about a download from both the old GoDaddy server and the new Zen server, and recorded the results.
You can tell which is which...!

So, yeah..
Tomorrow I'll spend all day doing uploads, then maybe Sunday have a fuck about with the SQL a bit, and see if I can get everything working right.
Once all that's done, it'll be switchover time, although I'll probably do some additional worldwide speed tests before I make anything permanent.

I’m on Amazon EC2.

Clouds are fake but at least this can scale.

Plus lots of fun Amazon AWS services.

Yeah, if there's one thing I've learned lately, it's that SoCoder doesn't actually use that much!!

Just had a "moment", where I looked at the top of the site and saw a bunch of users, then though "Oh, fuck, how'd they find the test site!?"
.. Then realised I'd automatically typed Socoder into the address bar..
