Powerbars : Here's the deal

Every night, when the Poll gets updated, the site will flick through your previous Socoder posts. (ie, it doesn't do it in realtime, it's just once per night.)

First off, it'll completely ignore Forum posts, because, really, nobody gives a shit if you've posted "Yes!" 100 times more than everyone else.
That's not big, and it's not clever.
Post counts suck.

Instead, it counts the other stuff, but will only count the last 12 week's worth of things that you've done.
Note, It will only count the past 12 weeks.

  • Showcases are awarded 15 points each. You can claim 4 of these within 12 weeks, for a total of 60 points.
  • Tutorials/Articles are also awarded 15 points each, but again you can only claim 4 within 12 weeks, for a total of 60 points.
  • Code Snippets will score you 10 points. You can claim 6 of these within 12 weeks, which totals 60 points, too.
  • Worklogs will get you 10 points. You can only claim for 3 of those within 12 weeks, for a total of 30 points.
  • Blog Entries will get you 2 points. You can claim 5 of these within 12 weeks, which can gain you 10 points in total.
  • Links will also score you 2 points, and you can claim 5 of these within 12 weeks too, meaning a total of 10 points.

You could conceivably score a combined total of 230 points, but the powerbars top out at 100 points.

If you drift off and stop posting, your score drops.
eg, If you don't keep an active worklog, blammo.

But if you keep constantly posting new things, you can keep it topped up, and a nice green or even blue color.

The Red Zone is <5, so to get a nice green power bar, you oughta be consistently posting about 1 link per month. That's NOT a lot to ask...

If you want a slightly higher score, use the blog.

And if you want a super score, you're just going to have to start coding!!

All Spammy "I want a happy score" style blogs/showcases/etc will be deleted. This isn't some stupid "Get High!!" competition. It's more the fact that I was getting sick of the "Socoder" newsletter becoming the "Things that Jay did this week" newsletter.

Note, this was just re-posted into the FAQ's so I could link to it!

I take it that the number in the power bar is the percentage of the maximum available number of points that you have, and not your total?

No it's a total..

It tops out at 100, because otherwise it would be really hard for newbs, or folk at 0, to get up to 100. They'd have to post a CRAPLOAD to get their number up.
Instead, by topping out at 100, it's at least vaguely doable.

2*Showcases = 30
2*Articles, probably based on the showcases = 30
2*Code Snippets, maybe something useful you coded in the showcases = 20
2*Worklogs, in those exact same showcases = 20

= 100 points.
Simple!

Why do the power bars only go up to 100, if I can make 230 points?

I think it's for the reason Jay just gave. 100 is the cap - if you have more points, it displays as 100, so that others can get a chance without having to spam large numbers of articles/showcases/etc.

@Jay, Why does the powerbar go to 0 for a day the return back to normal? Like today mine 0, but (presumming) when the server updated the powerbars did it return back to 57?

Until I fix up the other thing, the powerbars will reset if you update your profile. No biggy, just a teensy tweak whereby I reused something old that wasn't any use.

I had an idea earlier about the powerbars, what if you added a graph feature so we could see how people's stats go up and down? You could use the Google graph API for rendering.

It would be even cooler if you could also tie in why it's gone up. What games/articles/code snippets/etc were added to adjust the value.

Yeah, I should probably get around to some Socoder work, really.
After all the Jayenkai Archive stuff, I seem to be in a very webby mood lately.
