Wubi Installer.

Install Ubuntu from Windows

Aparently this will make it into the official 8.04 CD - install Ubuntu from windows, to a virtual-disk file, and set it up with a dual-boot grub automatically.

Seems like this will make installation easier (the partitioning options in the liveCD installer wasn't the clearest thing in my experience)


The only downside is that unless you move the file to a dedicated partition, you have to actally worry about defragging!

 		I have started downloading it. The download reached 86% within half-hour but since then, it has been stuck at this point for nearly an hour.

The time-remaining keeps increasing, but the kb/s keeps decreasing. Did the same thing happen to you, Ben ?.

 		I had't downloaded it yet (I'm waiting for v8.04 of Ubuntu before doing anything to my new machine) but I just tried and it took 40 seconds at 239kb/sec - maybe it was just a one-off problem?

I cancelled the installation, and the run the setup program again. It continued to download from the previous progress position.

I am having trouble getting it to run any media files at the moment.

Ok, go to System > Administration > Software Sources
and make sure Multiverse is enabled.

Then in Applications > Add/Remove search for "restricted exras" and install that and also search for "plugin" and just tick the check boxes and hit apply to install flash and other multimedia plugins.

If you want to watch DVDs it's slightly harder, because it's technically illegal as they had to reverse engineer it and aren't paying license fees, but there's plenty of guides if you google playing DVDs on Ubuntu

This is a nice guide to stuff.

 		Linux dosent come with most common media decoders because they are proprietary. I use VLC player on Windows and Linux as it plays just about everything and dosent come with a ton of useless crap.
