I can think of two ways they found out:
1) The people had a mansion, maybe they had enough money to get BBC to report it
2) Google Earth is just older free versions of lots of different satellite image companies. (You can pay to get those maps) When something big happens, the image companies take a picture of the area. They give the old ones to Google Earth for free. They might have found out by randomly looking at one of those maps...
