VistaSwitcher

Alt+Tab ++ !

https://www.ntwind.com/software/vistaswitcher.html
Inspired by Cower's comments in the MacTools discussion I had a quick Google for app+specific alt-tabbing on Windows.

This app replaces alt+tab with it's own which also adds alt+` for switching between apps of the same program. It does other stuff too, but I installed it entirely for that one feature.

What this really shows to me is that a lot of the major features available on other OS's are available for Windows. You can even get a multiple-desktop 3D cube!

What this really shows to me is that a lot of Windows users don't like the idea of using a better OS with features they really like, so they rely on developers to provide slow implementations of those features they don't have that don't really fit into their OS to begin with due to Microsoft deciding to maintain the status quo instead of actually coming up with something innovative.

Cower, the problem is with better OSes like the many different flavours of linux is that the applications i want to run are just not available or of the same standard as that which appear on windows. There are ways around things but thats not the point.

I play a lot of games and just dont want to reboot my machine everytime i want to jump between a game or programming.

I love open source and quite like Mandriva as an OS but i want to be able to just use my PC not faff around trying to get something to work in an environment it was not designed to run in.

MS may not be the cutting edge anymore but you cannot beat it for stability (if your PC crashes your doing something wrong) or software choice.

With Linux this is usually true (apps on Linux generally suck), with Mac OS, it's more of a myth. Most people talk about having some specific program they need that isn't on Mac OS and honestly after using that argument for years and then making the switch, it's bullshit. I've bought a grand total of maybe.. four programs in that time and the rest are more or less accounted for either a) by developers porting to Mac OS (Silo being Mac/Windows from the get-go) or by finding vastly superior alternatives (such as TextMate as compared to the likes of any other programmer's editor on Windows/Linux).

Also, Microsoft has been beaten on stability for years, so that's bullshit too.

i would have to disagree with you on stability there cower, the ONLY reason an apple product is stable, and they are not perfect, is because they are stuck with the same hardware. Windows and linux has a vast amount of hardware to spice up the mix.

if i could mix the bleeding edge tech of linux with the quality of microshaft the world would be perfect for me.

I understand you use the right tool for the job though, photoshop/cs suite on a Mac is a lot nicer, as it was designed for it. I can honestly say I cannot remember the last time my Windows 7 PC crashed without aid from my shitty programming, even then it was nothing ending a task couldn't cure. It is overclocked too so would expect a little bit more instability but its rock solid.

back on topic, I have been using this for a couple of days now and stick with my initial view of it being brilliant.

Mac OS X is optimized to work perfectly on the hardware is ships with. This notion of "bumping the specs" is a Windows thing. I never wish my OS ran faster because it works perfectly.

I have to agree with cower, Mac software is superior to any Windows software I've ever used. Also, don't let Microsoft fool you, Macs do gaming. I play CounterStrike Source all the time. Tons of premium games exist on the Mac platform.

I didn't realise my brief comment would spark such debate! It was mostly meant against the "Windowz can't do X" attitude that some people (no one here) tend to have (mainly Linux zealots) when often they are just plain wrong.

Your right, but it's gaming market is still microscopic compared to Windows. For example none of the game shops I visit have a Mac section.

It's also currently only a handful of companies (although yes big ones like EA and Valve) who are really pushing it.
