I remember when I used to go to High School in the UK I got introduced to RM Basic by a friend of mine, and we spent countless hours in the computer room building all sorts of whacky programs, including football simulators, a donkey kong clone (that was never finished), and my friend made a chat program called "Postman" which I thought was quite revolutionary at the time
Anyway, I remember in the corner there was a few dusty big weighty Basic books (I am not sure what type they were) and they were from the late 70s or early 80s, chock-a-block full of programs.
There was a flight simulator, which really took me by surprise as I couldn't believe someone wrote a flight simulator (for jumbo jets if memory serves me right) for RM Basic, or indeed earlier versions of Basic.
There was a "gold mine" program which I coded, which was fun as it taught you mathematics and basic economics.
Also there was a "lottery" program, this was around the time that the National Lottery started and a colleague wrote out the program and bet £10 or something on the most popular 1000 numbers or something and won a small amount of money (can't remember how much).
What was really odd was that there was so many programs for this flavor of Basic and I can't remember what the book was called.
Anyway, I thought it was a good trip down memory lane. | | |

There used to be LOADS of this stuff, around.
Mid 80s, when "Home Computing" was popular, there were books designed for everyone, but especially kids, teaching them the ins and outs of basic.
I miss those..
Where'd they all go!?

I used to have a ZX Spectrum book that had about 16 or so games in it.
But each one was written out as a nice long length tutorial, explaining all kinds of cool stuff.
It even had a Chess game, with AI!
..
I'm really cheesed off that I can't find that!

I might have to go back to that school to see if they still have it... though I doubt they would.
I do not think it was RM Basic, I do not recall what flavor of Basic it was.. all I remember was that it was Basic and was on the RM computers which seemed to be in every school at the time. | | |

Dunno about RM, it was all BBC's and Acorn Archimedes at all the schools I been to. | |
