I wouldn't use Dropbox for any serious project backups; you should still use version control on top of it. The main advantage I have for dropbox is for sharing between PCs, especially when they are close to each other, so I don't have to faff about with USB keys.
Obviously you can use version control for that too, but if it's already all in one folder (Dropbox), then you don't have to manually commit and update the changes when you're moving. Although you can only get away with that if you are the only person viewing those files.

Dropbox is also pretty cool for throwing a file up on the internet very quickly, which is mostly what I use it for.

You don't need Dropbox for that, you already have a site - just use FTP!

Yeah, but my site has a FTP lock, you have to go into the control panel, unlock it for whatever specific time, then, you can FTP as normal.... I actually like that, as its a bit more secure, so, just dropboxing something quickens the process of getting something up there quickly.

I don't think I agree with you on security Dabz. Having FTP permanently unlocked will be just as insecure as using Dropbox, as in both cases you have the server opened up to transfer files onto it. FTP also has a lot of security you can add on top, so it should be more secure. It also allows you to ensure that the security is setup right; I don't know what Dropbox is using underneath.
But it's a neat idea. However I'd be constantly worried about getting two explorer windows mixed up.

When I'm doing server work, on any of my sites, I only unlock it for an hour max, so generally, 99.9% of the time it is actually locked.
That's why I like dropbox, I use the public folder to plonk odds and sods in, nothing special, just quick screenies, files and what not, instead of having to go through the rigmarole of logging into the control panel, going into the FTP account settings, then firing up filezilla, dragging the file into filezilla's window, watch it upload then resolve the URL, which is mostly manually.
So, dropbox, drag file, right click, get public address, paste, post, un voila!

When we got the house, that very pipe there was running through the centre of the kitchen, I was over the moon with it, the whole house was a wreck (And I mean a proper wreck) but I've done it all up and it's smashing now, but, back then, I couldnt resist taking a snap of it because people must of been eating their cornflakes next to that!

I don't think anyone else would delete it either, the chances of comming across something like that again is one in a million. LOL
I've even got a copy of it on my computer, come to think of it, I might even stick it on my facebook status. PMSL |

I tried Dropbox for a bit. Two to Three Days, and could not get a direct link for my flash code.
I kept getting a download dialog box which is not what I need.
I lot of those good file storage sites prevent certain types of direct link access privileges.

@Steve - so true
@dna - sorry what were you trying? You place files in your Dropbox folder and it gets synced with the Dropbox server and any other devices you have your Dropbox account on... | | |

That was the problem steve.
I was trying to place a direct link to those files for use on another web site.
For example if the file was a music file then, people could then select the link and hear the music playing or, if someone selected the link to the page then the music would begin automatically.
I had another website but they went out of business.
