Socoder -> Off Topic -> Microsoft, spying and shite....

|!!ARGH| I just read something on a different forum - won't say which one cos it's largely irrelevant. But a number of people seem to be obsessed with the fact (or not) that Microsoft are spying on them.

Really? Are they really? It's been doing my head in for a while.

I'm not sure which moon of Jupiter people are living on where they think that the people who made their computer operating system are harvesting data and passing it on to the FBI. Yes... Microsoft pay a man to spy on 20 billion PCs and devices ALL AT THE SAME TIME, and pass on his findings to a government agency who probably have bigger fish to fry than whether or not you're looking at porn sites and downloading moody copies of Breaking Bad.

And even if they are doing that.... so bloody what? I for one don't give a flying toss if the FBI (or probably Scotland Yard, in my case) know that I'm visiting SoCoder several times a day, reading the BBC news and googling for videos of cats and dogs doing stupid shit for my daughter to laugh at. Why would I care? Why would THEY care?

I'd wager a rather large turnip that the ONLY reason ANYBODY wants to monitor your internet use, is so they can target ad services to things you might be interested in, instead of just dodgy Viagra knock-offs and Russian dial-a-bride sites, which is probably what you'd get if it wasn't for targeted advertising.

SHOCK HORROR! HOW THE FUCK DARE THEY TAILOR ADS TO THINGS I MIGHT LIKE????!

Honestly people, get a bastard grip. Microsoft doesn't care what you're looking at, and nor does anybody else. |ARGH!!|

Hm... the "rant" tag comes across with a little more vitriol than I intended....

Privacy advocates can be troublesome, sometimes, but they're not the problem.
It's the tin-foil-hat brigade that are the worse.
Suggest to them that simply being online AT ALL means their data is being gathered by the bucketload, and they'll pretty much freak the hell out.

Yes, I'm 100% certain that Win10 tracks some of the stuff I do, and sends reports to Microsoft.
But I'm also 100% sure that that also happens with literally MILLIONS of other systems, and that there's not a single employee at Microsoft whose job it is to track "Mr Ted Bob"s private internet history!!

... Or at least, not ONE employee.... There's a whole army of workers doing that job.

I'd wager a rather large turnip

And now that line might get harvested by Microsoft, so prepare for unlimited amounts of SPAM in you inbox from companies that sell large GM turnips. LMARO!

I surprised that Tin-Foil-Hat Brigade don't get inexhaustable amounts of SPAM from Bacofoil.
