; Hello World

Due to the dangers of modern Internet account hacking, and the overall ridiculousness of Spambots, I've decided to set up a simple five step authentication process for all new SoCoder accounts.

Step One : When signing up, you'll need to supply your real name. This will be used to validate who you are in the real world, so that if you only signed up to post about your stupid Nintendo FriendsCode, we can all point and laugh at how you didn't read any of the ample warnings.
A request will be made to google, (because you WILL be using a gmail account, won't you?) to ensure the name you give is the same as that of your google plus account. Once this step has been verified, you can move on to step two.

Step Two : You will be asked to hand over your mobile phone number, so that a passcode can be sent to it. We will use this information to figure out what kind of phone you own. This ensures you are geeky enough to belong to Socoder.
If you have a brand new phone, you will be welcomed with open arms.
If your phone is out of date, you will not be allowed onto Socoder.
If your phone is VERY out of date, you will definitely be allowed onto Socoder, because we all understand the need to keep hold of old decrepit technology.
You must enter the passcode provided, before moving on to step three.

Step Three : A postcard with a picture of a duck will be sent to your mailing address. On the rear of the postcard will be an encrypted string, which you must decipher using whatever methods are currently available.
You may use a calculator if you wish.
Ample space will be provided, so be sure to make notes, and show your workings.
Only once you've entered the correct unencrypted passcode, you will be allowed to upload a scan of your workings, in PDF format, so we can check your answer. If all is well, you can move onto the next step.

Step Four : Once your birth certificate, bank details, driving license, passport and other photographic identification has been accepted, authenticated, scanned and archived, we will return it to you (in the S.A.E. you, of course, provided) along with a 3" floppy disk. Simply place the disk into any available Amstrad CPC or PCW, and open the included .txt file to gain access to the required passcode. You may now move onto the final step.

Step Five : Once you've logged in, you will need to complete an eighty-two question examination, delving into such things as logic loops, memory management, Binary and Punched Cards, and the importance of GOTO.
Since we understand your need to register on the forum quickly, the examination has been trimmed for speed. As such, each question will require no more than a simple 1,000 word answer, so shouldn't take any longer than a week or two to complete.
If you score over 100% your account will be fully unlocked, and you'll be free to complain about how older things were better, that modern gaming systems seem to do nothing but download and install updates, and how much more important pixels are than polygons.

Welcome to Socoder

; Similarities

Spinal worries that his Joe 2 game might be a little similar to the FEZ game, and wonders if it might be time to give in.
Let's be honest, here. There are barely any good new ideas left, out there, and Lord knows, if there is, it's probably hidden amongst my AGameAWeek archive, somewhere!!
Every idea's been done to death, and beyond. The trick is, to make a good version, because that's all that really matters.
Angry Birds is just a Castle Crush knock off, but it's a good one, and it had just the right style at just the right time.
Anything wearing a Top Hat wins bonus points, in my book.

; Printer Hacks

it's all sorts of kewl that folk have figured out how to run Doom directly on a printer.
Not in the silly "page per footstep" sort of way, but instead running on the little LCD display that modern printers come with.
But, exactly how kewly is such tech?
Essentially the warning of this tale is, if someone can run that.... What else could be running on your printer?

; Changing Colours

Rockford wants to know if there's a quick, painless (and free) batch-conversion tool which can take a single palette, and convert a bunch of images to use that palette.
Sounds like a job for Irfanview!!
Always on hand to do any image based stuff you can think of, Irfanview is one of my "must install" utilities, alongside PaintShop Pro, CoolEdit and FLStudio.
A fantastic tool in my ever increasing toolbox.

; And then there were Billions

And, of course, the big event of the week.
Microsoft paid 2.5 billion dollars for Mojang, and the rights to Minecraft.
Yikes!!

; Return of the Mouse

DangerMouse is being brought back, with over 50 episodes being produced for CBBC.
Alexander Armstrong has been picked to voice DM, and good old Kevin Eldon (The Real Rod Hull) will be voicing Penfold.
Dave Lamb (the guy from Come Dine With Me) will be narrating It.
As scary as "new voices" are, I must admit that these aren't really bad choices, and I can see them fitting the series rather well.
Now we just have to hope the scripts match the talents..

; Popeye!

Meanwhile, over at Sony, they're developing a new Popeye movie using CGI.
For a test animation, see here..

; Morph

And since we're on the subject of old animations being brought back, let us not forget that there's currently a new series of Morph, over on YouTube.

; RIP : Douglas E Smith

This week saw the passing away of the developer of the classic platformer franchise LodeRunner.
Having taken a LOT of inspiration from LodeRunner, JNKPlat is constantly getting compared to it whenever I launch new editions.
I wonder what might become of the LodeRunner franchise, and hope to god it doesn't get completely fucked over, in the sake of profits..
... It probably will... :/

; Using a Watch Whilst Driving

If using a mobile, whilst driving, is considered a criminal offence, then what happens to folk who are using their SmartWatch?
Surely that's infinitely more dangerous, since they'd generally end up having to use both hands to do it!
Talk about dangerous driving!!

; Bundles

iOS8 is out, and bundles are finally doable in the AppStore.
I'm testing the bundle waters with an AGameAWeek Monkey-X bundle, which features all but two of my Monkey-X developed games. (The other two couldn't be included, because they're free...!)
Will it make a dent in sales? Stay tuned to find out.
(I'm guessing ...no!!)

Leftovers
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

iOS8 has a new predictive word function, like Android and WinPhone have had for yonks, where you can simply tap on suggested future words to write piles of mindless shite...
Let's have a play!!

"The fact I can get it right away with the new version is better."
"SpikeDislike is the only thing that would have to do it again in a while."
"Blockman is a good time with the only one that is a good time."
"DiscBlaster is so good I don't have to go out with my family and friends."
"Platdude is so cute and funny as a result of a sudden urge to be a little more than the original version of the only thing that would make me happy when I'm bored."
"Socoder is a great way to get the best way to go back and forth between the two sides of the day before my birthday."

Word perfect. Ten out of ten..
