Never in my whole life

I have NEVER had it tell me I actually need to defragment before. One time, there was red all over the place, and yet, "You do not need to defragment this volume." I got this hard drive a few weeks, maybe a month ago, and it's never been defragmented. Makes enough sense.

It's always good to defrag, whether it needs it or not..
Just try to avoid too many torrents, 'cos they REALLY eat through your HD's lifespan.

Windows 7 defrags automatically, whether you like it or not.

@Phoenix - Although I did hear something about it ignoring files larger than 64mb?

I believe Vista defrags in the background too. Plus even if there is no option to turn it off, I'll expect you can disable it via a registry key.

@Coders: the defrag appeares to have done very little work because you have so few files on your machine. I wouldn't worry about it and just defrag again in another month.

When solid state drives become mainstream the defrag won't matter anymore.

I disabled defragging in Windows 7 and use Piriform Defraggler - it's much better
