I wouldn't run either Vista or this Beryl, myself, but it's still cool!

Video 1 - Linux's Beryl GUI thingie, vs. Vista.

Link 2 - More Beryl (very cool!)

WOW, that Beryl thing is pretty cool. unfortunatly i dont think i would ever really use it, its just one of those cool but useless things.

I think the ripples over the screen are a bit over the top; some of it looks like they added it more for pretty than functionality. Granted, I think that vista did the same thing in some places, but I think that Beryl went a bit too far.

but no less it looks really cool!

I've seen that before. There is only one feature of Vista I don't use, the really fancy alt-tab. But most of the Berly features in that video I wouldn't use. Berly looks very nice and flashy, but who wants their folders to burst into flames or watch a video over the edge of a cube? For day to day use I'd still say Vista looks nicer.

Besides, Vista has some far better looking 3d graphics plug-ins. Like Oblivion, Rome: Total War and my current favourite Battlefield 2. I use those features regularly.

Yeah cool... If I were Bill Gates, I would be dumping in my pants right now. Beryl seems to put Vista in the shade.

Other than the fancy/fat GUI and the endless "Are you sure" prompt thingies on Vista, did they add anything else?

Because I don't see how they can charge so much for a new GUI! And Vista Basic looks like Windows 98, so that looks horrible too

I really liked UAC, it made me feel powerful and as though I was in control of something important.

You sure about Vista Home comming only with the Windows Classic theme? I thought it came with the basic Aero theme, the one without the transparencies and fades.

To be honest, I don't really know much. I went by what I saw at ToasyTech, but he may have just turned *everything* off as an example. Even so, I don't think Vista is worth an upgrade for a new GUI and the UAC alone. Maybe after Service Pack 2 it will be ready to change my mind, but I won't ever consider it even if it becomes affordable until it's been out a long while.

The thing that makes XP bearable is all the little tiny programs that individuals have made to tweak it and remove the annoying features. Vista is probably not going to be as tweakable for a fair while. I think it has potential, but I don't even have the slightest inclination just this moment

Well, can I play all my games and use all my software on it without problems? What about my printer and my WLAN adapter? => Windows wins.

With constant development, there should be better Windows Emulators in the not to distant future. Fingers crossed.

Windows Emulation will never be as good as Windows.

Dunno actually, running some of my programs compiled with Cobra under Wine in Linux made them run faster, not slower. I'd say 1.5 to 2 times as quickly.

However, the GUI elements (like the IDE) are admittedly much slower.

Maybe the speed increase is due to decreased bloat of the DLLs, etc. It's not so much an emulation of Windows as a "compatability layer", as in the EXEs run semi-natively with a bit of a helping hand.

BTW, both my Windows XP and Ubuntu take up roughly the same RAM, so I don't think that would explain the extra speed.

Small apps are one thing, but would Wine run Oblivion as accurately as on Windows? or Visual Studio? or any large Windows piece of software perfectly?

Yes and no... depends on the app and how it's coded. I've got Internet Explorer 6 (for testing only, honest!) working flawlessly as IE6 gets and a few Windows games. But some programs wouldn't work quite as well, you're right.

In the Wine database of what works, Photoshop 7 gets a platinum rating, meaning it apparently runs fine. And World of Warcraft gets Gold, which means it runs pretty much fine. (Some choppy sound, apparently.)

Could that be something to do with hardware drivers being different on the two opperating systems Ben ?.

Possibly, but honestly, I don't know actually Sorry
