Final Fantasy 7 and 8, master pieces. Phantasy Star Online and Shenmue should also be mentioned, especially Shenmue.

Ocarina of Time soundtrack. Specifically, I loved the Gerudo Valley music. |

I also love the Metal Gear Solid theme tune. The MGS 2 titles intro especially really gets me buzzing every time I watch it.

I have quite a few favourites.... the theme for the Battle With Gilgamesh from various Final Fantasies is quite a good one, and 'Vortal Combat' from Half Life 2 Episode 2 is rather exciting as well.
And then of course 'Still Alive' is quite nice.

Pretty much the whole Half Life 2: Episodes 1 & 2 soundtrack!
I sometimes listen to it on its own, it's that fantastic.
If you download Audiosurf you get the whole soundtrack for free!

You're saying Monkey Island, otherwise everyone's going to shout at you for having picked something that's not created for the game.
..
For the record, after a whole day at work, I still have the blinkin' Shenmue theme running through my head.
So, that wins!

Ocarina of Time definitely. Actually, the Windwaker soundtrack might even top it. Also, that haunting main theme from the original Halo.

Mmm, Jet Set Radio!
Sonic Rush.. When I first heard it I thought it was utterly crap. Then when I actually played the game, the soundtrack fit the game so amazingly well. I was absolutely blown away by how well it worked.
Loved it since.
And Space Channel 5, there's another Sega one!
Oh, and Sonic R! Can't forget to add Richard Jacques in there! He did MSR, too!
GTA 1. Cracking tracks..

MSR had very good game music and very good clones of real music. It was just well made but I don't think any of the tracks were that memorable.
But pretty much all Sega games have awesome music, Nights FTW!

I haven't heard too many songs from video games because I don't play a lot of video games, but I like the Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare from FF1. I can play it on the piano lol. |

I'll second the MGS2 intro tune. I also like the music from Knytt. Two great games, by the way.

Oooo yeah and the Wind Waker sound track. Not as imprinted in my head, but there are some pieces in that which blow me away. Nintendo always do absolutely fantastic jobs with soundtracks. |

Since we all seem to have a wide variety of video game music that we love, can anyone think of any music from a game they've played that was mind-bogglingly awful?

I've never played "Ring : The Videogame" (As in the Japanese horror movie, one of my faves infact..) but it's music was posted in a review, because the reviewer was pretty much pulling his hair out after about 10 mins.
IIRC, this was one of very very few tracks in the game.

I'm partial to happy SNES-era music. Kendorage is pretty typical of it, although it might not be the best example.

I'm glad to see some other Shenmue fans here. It's my favorite "next gen" game.
Some of my favorite game tracks:
Ninja Gaiden (NES) Act 4-2
Double Dragon (arcade) title theme
Revenge of Shinobi (Mega Drive) Chinatown theme
Also, the intro to Solstice (NES) is pretty nice.

Actually.... it's might not count, but I really like the title music from the BIll & Ted game I never finished. Tracked by our good friend Jayenkai and myself...
