I think these are the two biggest issues with Windows 8:
- Multitasking sucks. It's hard to switch between Metro apps and the Metro/Aero switch is nauseating. Pulling up Metro apps alongside others is primitive and basic. It's called Windows and using them was an ingenious way to multitask.
- Metro apps suck. They are colorful but are terrible UI/UX. Many of them need completely redone.
I think resolving these two issues would clear up most complaints.
The first one would require major changes. I would get rid of the new start menu on the desktop version and instead allow users to install Metro apps like Windows 7 apps. The tablet version can keep it. Apple is taking the approach of writing a mobile, tablet, and desktop version of the app. They don't look exactly the same but they do the same thing and provide a much better experience. Microsoft should copy this approach. Using a mouse on a touch screen app just sucks.
The second one--I don't know. Metro is the problem. iOS and Android offer clear interfaces by using controls people are used to. The user interface is intuitive. Metro is not intuitive. It breaks from the norm way too much.
That's not even the worst part.
Microsoft has their head up their asses and is pretending like Windows 8 is great. That's just scary.

I find the left-corner-left-bar-switch pretty natural to use, even with a mouse.

So you expect them to say that it's terrible?

Hey guys, yeah I'm still around.
I haven't looked much into the new Windows 8 (no I'm not going to try the demo), but... this Metro thing, is it supposed to allow apps to run on a PC _and_ tablets / smartphones too? That would sound pretty cool - but they need to get the interface right, and intuitive. Sorry Windows, the iPhone did do that right (very right). Plus, it might work better if they were in some kind of emulator-looking program, instead of being apps in themselves. But I dunno.
I'm a bit skeptical of buying Windows 8, especially after the flop that Microsoft had with Vista. With all the changes they made under the hood, much of it caused problems. But I was surprised at how fast Windows 7 became a reality. I only heard of it and like a month later it was the norm - which was critical because Vista wasn't passing the test. I'm thinking that this may happen again, and Windows 9 won't be that far off. Maybe Microsoft needs this / intends for this to happen, as it really lets them see how people like the changes to Windows.
So I'll hold my opinions on Windows 8 until it becomes widely available and the normal for new systems.
