My old Archos Gamepad 2 seems to be having terrible issues with it's battery.
Poor thing can barely last about 10 minutes, from full charge, whilst still plugged into the laptop!!

I've been searching for a replacement for the past hour or so. This (GPD xd) seems to be the pick of the litter, but I wondered if you guys might have better suggestions.

Requirements
1. Inbuilt Gamepad! Be it clamshell like a DS, or side-on like the Switch, the whole point of having such a device is to check my controller code is working, and that my OUYACompatible games are working, without having to fuck about with the telly!

2. Gyroscope. I don't think the GPD xd has one. I'm not sure. Can't find out. But it sure would be nice to play WarioWare Twisted at some point, and it doesn't look like Nintendo's going to let me do that legally.. So Emu's it is!

3. Must run Android! Durrr!!

So, any recommendations, or am I just going for that one?

(He says, quietly thinking "you were supposed to be saving up for that Switch devkit")

The GPD XD is the one I'd go for too - it's been talked about on the Pandora forums as a fairly good machine.

OK, ordered that.
.. It'd better be easy to get my own test-games on there! That's the whole bloomin' point!

... On a TOTALLY unrelated matter, I've been re-organising my Emulator Archive.
Can't imagine why I'd need to do that.

It looks like it is out of stock here in holland. It seems a nice gadget. Lots of things it can emulate also. I would want one just for the amiga emulation.

I noticed they are selling the psp vita for 450 euro here. Would of been the thing I would've bought, but no way with that price.

Had to order mine from FunStock (the link above) as Amazon didn't stock the red one, and reviews of the silver (32gb) model were making it sound like the "not Amazon, through Amazon" seller was reselling dodgy stock...
Hmmm...

I somewhat trust FunStock..They have a good rep, anyway.

I think you can still get a discount on function if you use the code ROUNDUP . Can't be sure though.

Is that for a PSP OR Vita? Either way that is a rip off. You can pick up a PSP here for less than £50 and a Vita for £100. GAME had brand new PSPs ("Go" and "Lites") for £40 at one point.

They are both great machines - for gaming and emulation, but I prefer the (original) Vita for it's super bright OLED screen. Lovely for TxK (and everything else tbh).

Here the link with the psp vita.

Linkage

You got it quickly jay!

Looking good. Looks addictive there with monkey-x connected to it I will keep an eye here in holland when they have them in stock again. Might get one for myself also. I saw one ( out of stock) for 180 euro so it is not that expensive.

Testing - Part One

The system is loaded with a batch of pre-installed emulators, which appear on the main menu and let you pick a game and run it.
But it's all very "Pretty GUI" based, and seems to require that you have little screenshots and icons and shit, for every single rom.
It's also limited to "Arcade" (I'm assuming MAME), N64, SFC (which I eventually realised was Super Famicom), DC and PS1
Placing a rom into the folder makes it's name pop up on the big unweildy menu in a Windows-Metro-style tile, so that you can't actually read the full name.
"Super Mario Wo" and "Super Mario Wo", for example, are currently visible on the menu. One being World, the other being World 2 - Yoshi's Island.
That's just not good!!!

In addition, the pile of tiles is completely unorganised, meaning if you have more than a screenful of games (12!?) the whole thing's a ruddy great big disorganised mess.
Most definitely a case of them trying their best to make a user-friendly interface, but failing miserably!!

Give me a simple filelist any day..

Emulation wise, the inbuilt ones seem nice and stable.
The N64 Mupen can seemingly play Conker's Bad Fur Day, which my previous Gamepad couldn't at all.
The SNES (not sure what the emu is) is also nice and smooth.

Sonic Adventure seems to run nicely on the DC built in emulator, too, which is nice.
Bit of an oddity in that the Dreamcast is set to Japanese.. The emulator doesn't appear to have any settings, except the "Widescreen" button, (which extends the camera beyond Fullscreen resolution!) so I'm not entirely sure how I could change that.

There's supposed to be a GBA emulator built in, but it doesn't appear on the main menu along with the others. Instead, I had to open ES File Explorer and from there select a .gba, then select the emulator which was handily named "Gameboy Advance Emulator"
No WarioWare Twisted on it, though. Might have to download myBoy and see if that can do it. Not building my hopes up..

Build Quality

It's ok..
The hinge is a bit "This could go the way of my DSLite" clicky, but otherwise it feels sturdy enough.

Tried putting my MicroSD card in the MicroSD slot. It felt like it'd clicked in, but ... then it fell out..
I tried a few times, and .. nope.. doesn't seem to like it.
.. Then I tried it upside down and it clicked into place perfectly.
D'oh!!

I'll do more testing later. Laptop battery's about to conk out!
For now, it works with my games, and that's the main thing.

Working with your own games is definitely the main thing.

While there are emus on-board, you might be able to update these or even replace them if you choose. There are loads of great Android emulators available - commercial and free, so don't write them off just yet.

Anyway, it's a nice looking machine and there really isn;t a better feeling than getting your game running on new hardware

Yeah, it includes GooglePlay so anything and everything!
Mupen64's got a nice feature where, having scanned for Roms, it then downloaded all the boxart!

Mmmm... nice!

Going to have to delete, unzip, then recopy all the CPC games, since the "Droid CPC" emu doesn't let you open files in zips. *tsk*

Have additionally installed a Gameboy/Color, a Gameboy Advance, (MyBoy and OldBoy) as well as an all-in-one Sega thing (MD.emu does Master System, GameGear and MegaDrive)
All seem rosy and bright!
The PlayStation emulator is twitchy. I'm not sure what format the thing wants the "roms" in, although it'll happily play Destruction Derby 2!

More on the Dreamcast emu, in that it has a LOT of flicker in Soul Calibur.
... Cant say more than that, as I don't have any more DC games on my HD, to test on it!!!

Do you need to purchase things like the amiga kickstart roms seperate? I noticed they are for sale on the playstore for not that much btw. No experience myself with the android emu's.

Not to sure on other os'es roms either. I expect you would need to have everything yourself and that only the emulator software is included without roms and games.

As with all emulation, it's an emu by emu case.
The four or five preinstalled emus (PS1, Dreamcast, N64, SNES and GBA) require no further tweaking. Anything else is dependent on how setup the emu is.
I've been paying (Shock!) for most of mine via GooglePlay.

That's system Roms only, mind.
Game Roms are up to you to find.

(Search Archive.org for the TOSEC archives!)

Haven't got any coding done, today.
Just been passing about with this thing!

It's more or less at a workable point, now
There does, however, seem to be a slight 'every two seconds or so" slip up in framerate.
I'm going to have to dig through settings to see if I can find out why that might be.
Hmmm.....

Because they wanted to steal a good design

The thumbstcks are lovely, btw. Proper tilty little thumbsticks, not like the flat sliding nub on a 3DS.
Mmm!

It really is a lovely design. And the hardware seems nice and capable, although I've yet to run any benchmarks on it.
Any Android Benchmark tests that people would recommend?

Spent a couple of hours getting more emu's installed.
Installed Johns SNES, which seems to cope better than the pre-installed one.
Also installed a few ZX Spectrum before settling on "Speccy" which seemed to work nicely with the joypad.
Still having quirky issues with the CPC, though, and can't seem to find a better emu. Hmmm :/
