Energy prices

The energy prices are suddenly really high everywhere. New contracts are up to 3 times as expensive per month. I started putting the laptop away and using the ipad more. The contract I have is stil at the old afforable price though. My contract has to be renewed in 9 months, so I hope there is some improvement in prices then.

They mentioned on the news that it is not strange to now have to pay a couple of hundred euro's a month extra for gas and electricity. In England energy companies had gone bankrupt I noticed.

Any advice on getting the costs down? I'm looking to be getting radiator foil. This prevents heat from going into the walls.

Our electric went up earlier than most. We then got bombarded by companies saying "Oh, boy, your electric is SUPER expensive.. Ours is WAY cheaper. Switch to us!!"

I've then sat back and watched as damn near every single one of them have shot up well beyond what we're paying.
Ours were the cheapest to begin with, so you add 30% (and .. fuck, they really did go up 30%!!) and it might be more expensive than it was, but .. After seeing all the others go up, too, it's now back to being the cheapest again*..

* We're on SSE, but mileage may/will vary in your area.

As for energy saving tips, look into what's plugged in all day.
I've gone from 2 PCs with monitors plugged in all day, to 1 MacBook that charges with a fairly low-wattage charger. (30w)
My NAS wattage is minimal, too. Dropping from the crazy tech-world that I once had, to mostly charging devices, has helped a TON in our power usage.

Other stuff..
LED bulbs helped a lot.
Switching to a Dolce Gusto or other such coffee maker, means your only "boiling" the water as it passes through the machine. No lengthy high-wattage kettle runs, here.

Oh, and open the doors if your house/flat is properly insulated. Helps the heat circulate better. If not, don't .. 'cos then the heat escapes!!
You'll soon know which is better.

I've seem a lot of fuel shares jump up over the the last few months with the price of crude oil going up higher and higher. There was lots of money to be made there, I should have swapped out from fuel tech into it earlierto better offset things, ahh well, lesson learnt.

Who knows what's next, inflation is trickling over here, possibly due to America printing so much money this year. It flows around the world over time and isn't great in general. Maybe next it'll be that food prices go up due to inflation, then we'll shortly later end up with people begging the government to put in price controls to deal with it, resulting in massive food shortages due to farmers not being paid enough, resulting in the government enslaving us to produce food and other services for free.

I'm probably reading way too far ahead here but I think I'm going to add some shares in Tesco, Sainsburys, McColls, etc after payday this month

This week the toilet paper in the local market was almost sold out again. They only had a couple of the more expensive ones. Today they stil did not have much to chose from. Panic!

One of the main reasons I invested in solar and a battery! We haven't paid a bill in over 2 years now.

Jammy bugger..
They do (did?) Solar grants in our area, but ours is a N/S roof, so wasn't efficient enough...? They wouldn't do it.
Bastards!!!

Over in SA, over 10 years the SA government did grants and offered a high FIT, so we installed a small 1.5KW array for around $3kaud that reduced our electricity bill from $300 per quarter to $0-$100 per quarter.

That system was still going after 10 years, but with prices increasing our bills "returned" to $300 per quarter. So, a couple of years ago we updated to brand new panels of a 6.6 KW array and installed a Telsa battery, which in total cost around $11kaud. The ROR is about 40months, but I still think it's worth it.

Definitely!
40 months isn't too long, in the grand scheme of things.

Also having the Tesla battery is a pretty cool piece of kit
