Every Friday, Waiting for the postman to deliver WarioWare

Print

; Hello World

Friday's WarioWare Gold day! I look forward to being a lazy fuck, playing hundreds of minigames, and enjoying a day away from the keyboard!
.. Or at least an hour, before going back to the coding.

This week I've been battling with scaling and ratios and all the other gubbins that comes with trying to wrangle a Desktop game down to the size of a 3DS, when you need to downscale positions, upscale primitives and rescale artwork.
Trying to make a bog standard Snake game, with a positional grid, in a space which changes based on screen resolution and ratio, but also fits snuggly into a 400x240 3DS screen and somehow still uses large enough sprites to be "readable", all at the same time.
It's certainly not been an easy task.
Thankfully, though, the hard part seems to be finished. Now it's just a case of tweaking the odd behaviours so that everything stays within the limits of the grid.

Making games in the modern era holds drastically different issues than how they were created just a decade ago, and trying to make a Generic Snake Clone is certainly proving that point.

SoCoder

It's been a bit of a quiet week at SoCoder, this week, as far too much "IRL" background stuff's going on.

Spinal's busy trying to decide what to do next with his life, after learning he'll definitely be losing his job, and all with a wedding date looming.
          socoder.net/?GotoPost=68391

WarOffice is busy preparing for his own imminent wedding, and has just had a massive stag do, lasting the entire weekend!
          socoder.net/?GotoPost=68423

Rychan's still beavering away at his NES edition of Flap Happy and Fancy Free, and has now added sharks into the insanity.
          socoder.net/?GotoPost=68381

And Spinal inquires about the plausibility of getting his Blitz-coded games up and running on Steam.
Signs appear to be good, but how realistic is it to actually make a dent in the grand old world of Steam?
          socoder.net/?Topic=7089

Other than that, most of the threads for this week have been TV/Movie/Gaming related, and there's not even really been too many of those, with only 12 threads having been posted to since last week's Newsletter.
With kids in the UK starting their annual 19 month Summer Hols, and all of this ludicrously warm weather that's still infecting our lovely dreary rainy season, I expect the forum's going to be a little more quiet over the next few weeks, so I can only apologise if the next few newsletters are a little more padded-by-youtube than they normally are!

I might try to come up with a couple of new sections during this quiet period..
Suggestions are always welcome.

My down turn is down to two things, first off, work, its summer shut down at the plant so all the Nissan workers are away on their jollys, so its been a bit mental at work as we have been servicing the smoke vents on the shop roofs, where there is about 750 of them, in this blazing heat, I've been knackered.

Secondly, I've actually started writing an app & website, so any excess energy I've had has been channelled into that... Its actually coming along well, more importantly, one of the first things I've done for a very long time where I've wanted to get my teeth into it, because usually, I've started stuff and lost interest within a couple of weeks!

I'm using B4A for it, and I'll tell you what, what a lovely piece of development kit that is mind, if you havent tried it, have a go... Its got everything mind, I really enjoy working with it, the IDE is great, the language is terrific, theres nothing you cannot do it seems, the community is canny (And busy)

Its bloody smashing!

Oh, and before I forget, there is a new game engine being built for it by the creator, Libgdx is in there already I think, but he's writing another one, heres a couple of test videos of it in action:-
