A Game of Super Strategy Maybe. (VER 0.7)

This is Shambo.

My latest creation is a turn-based, board-based, strategy game, with Atari 2600 style graphics.

Story Summary: You command statue heads with elemental powers against your opponent.

The Rules: Both players start with six units; two red (fire), two green (earth), and two blue (water). There are two stages to game play; the placement phase, and the attacking phase...

Placement: Players take turns strategically placing units onto the grid from their 'hand', until either both players run out of units, or until the board is filled up.

Attacking: Players take turns moving their pieces to capture opponents pieces. Combat works like rock, paper, scissors; fire beats earth, earth beats water, and water beats fire. Players select which piece of theirs will attack a surrounding piece. The attacking piece moves into the new position while the captured piece goes into that player's hand. A successful attack is rewarded with a 'combo point' on the attacking piece. The attack phase continues until no more moves can be made by either opponent. When this happens, game-play goes back to the placement phase.

Winning: Whoever is in control of the piece that earns four 'combo points' wins that match. Games last a set amount of matches.

Controls: Left arrow/right arrow - choose selection, space key - confirm selection, backspace key - new selection.

Enjoy!

Latest Update

June 16, 2008 - Version 0.5

This version is incomplete and is missing a few features. There is currently no AI; the player controls both opponents. Also, 'combo points' have not been added yet. Matches last forever... Finally, there are no special effects or fancy transitions, and stuff like that. But I'm working on it! Patience.

July 03, 2008 - Version 0.6

Version 0.6 offers (surprise!) hardly anything new. Dumb AI has been added so you don't have to do all the work yourself. Just don't expect a challenge. Also, you still can't finish a game (I should really work on that). But, there are a few text transitions, and included SOURCE CODE!

October 05, 2008 - Version 0.7

The game is back to player vs. player for now. Simple transitions have been added to make more sense of the game play. All basic elements have been added, meaning you can finally finish a round...sort of. There's a chance it may break upon victory. The main loop is still kind of kinky.

Nice game.
Easier to follow once you've bothered to read the instructions

I liked the original graphics better! :\
Might try this when I get home, unless you compile a version for Linux that I can download on my Asus EEE.

I've tried running HGE games under Wine before, and they at least half work. Seeing as how 1.0 just came out, maybe they will run better.

I tried it in wine* and it wouldn't respond to the keyboard. I'll have to give it a shot when I'm unlazy and turn my windows machine on.

* wine version 0.9.61, mind you - after four hours v1.0 hadn't finished compiling, so I'll have to wait until it appears in the arch package repository.

Looks nice, although you've taken quite some time to make it. I especially liked the retro graphics -- as long as the style is consistent you don't need Crysis-art. Did you draw them in Paint? Because the file endings are in upper case

Oh, and you might want to remove that console window. Should just be a matter of going to Properties -> Linker -> SubSystem -> Windows, if you're using VS. But you probably already knew that.

In any case, good luck with reaching 1.0
