Reinstalling Windows

Been a noisy morning, as Everest are replacing the top two, front bedroom windows.
The windows are "almost" done, but the amount of plaster that's come off the window surround is insane!!
Next job, we need to get a plasterer, and then probably look at doing the repointing, too.

Never not costly...
And our house is one of those "one little job leads to a complete rebuild" kinda houses!!

*sigh*

Dad's inheritance couldn't have come at a better time. .. But Dad was a cheap git, and it ain't gonna pay for half the work.
Balls!!

That's bad luck... or bad workmanship... I dunno.

We had ours triple-glazed a couple of years back and there was no damage whatsoever, inside or out.

These are typical double glazed, pvc frame etc, replacing 70s, maybe 60s, maybe earlier Wooden-framed single pane windows that have more than likely been there since the house was built.

To be honest, that’s not as bad as we were expecting to see!!
When he came down the stairs with tales of "all the plaster’s coming off!” we expected much much worse!!

That plaster must have been on its last legs anyway to have come off like that.

....yeah, that’s pretty much the story of this house.
Any little job becomes a giant chore!!

Yeah, that doesnt look too bad to me, seen worse... Just one of them things that goes with it, though, I'm surprised the window company who fitted it didnt ask if you wanted it patching up.

One thing I will say though regarding window fixing... They generally hire ANYONE, and I mean... ANYONE... Its not rocket science, but people should be vetted I think as windows are one of the things that need to be secure to, well, secure your home.

When I was with Laura, she rang me, and said that they were at a house that had been broken into, and one of the windows was, well, just on the floor outside, and how would they manage to do that.

Basically, a rogue window fixer... What happens is, they put the window in, make all the drilly noises, put a few fixings in (Spax nowadays) etc, then they use expanding foam around the window to seal it, this doesnt take long to set, so they remove all the fixings. Then, they patch up the inside reveals, and mastic around the outside... Thus locking it in, but with no proper fixings.

Maybe a year or two later, this rogue goes back to the address, cuts the mastic with a stanley knife, peels it all off, then they run a normal handsaw around the window cutting the foam. Couple of suckers on the window, give it a pull and voila... Their in!!!

Simple as simples be!

Yeah, when we got the downstairs living room window fitted ("The SpikeDislike Window") the fitter showed us a number of ways the window could be put in "backwards" so that it'd be piss-easy to take back out again. Alarming, to say the least.
So easy to do, and yet.. We have to trust them, 'cos .. What do we know!?!??!
