I wonder hoe long before these ai drivers start being put inside forktrucks. I wonderk if you can stil Work as a driver in 5 years.

They offered me a course once. Had to pay myself. But i was pretty much deep in debt already then.

Well, the actual driving of the thing, peasy after a little bit of practice (They are rear wheel drive, so, that takes a little getting used too), reversing down chicanes with loads on, getting used to the lifting end of things. The chew is like anything else, they have certain ways they want you to drive it, theres certain ways to approach stuff with little actions you do before you continue, like, say, making sure wheels are straight before any lifting, the forks are level before you lift, observation, is the hand brake is on... Stuff like that.

When your learning, theres a surprising amount to do, and, sometimes, you forget, or you miss something, like, levelling the forks, and you start raising them and think "Ooops, shit, forks!"

The hard bit is when your turning into a rack of pallets coming in from the side:-

Youve got to drive up, then, turn the fork lift 90', and basically be centre and square on with the pallet bays of the rack your intending to lift/deposit from/to... In one smooth motion... No forwards and backwards shunting (Though on the test your allowed one free shunt)

Then when youve sorted the load, you reverse out till your forks are out of the racking, reset them, then reverse and turn 90' at the same time, and move away... Its a pretty tight area youve got to do it in as well, there's not much room doing this manoeuvre.

The license is a valid license I could use anywhere, but in this case, its inhouse, because Nissan dont give them out afterwards (People used to go, get licenses then piss off to another job), which I'm not fussed about, but, because Nissan do the training, for in-house, they can set the rules, and fuck me, this is the daunting bit...

National tests allow you 40 penalty points or less for a pass, Nissan want 20 or less, its like a driving tester saying "Well Michael, national tests allow you 15 minors for your car license, but because you'll be driving in County Durham, your only allowed 8 to get it"... Bit of shitter innit!

Thankfully, I did okay, 9 points in total... You do about 6 lifts in the racking, one of my lifts, I turned in 90' and overshot the turn a little, so reset for a free shunt, went in again, under turned it (3 points), then I got it dead on. Then, on one high lift, I deposited the load slightly left of centre in the racking bay... Fuck all mind, but, 3 points and finally, I slightly brushed a barrier reversing back out of a lift for another 3 points. I never kicked myself for the first 6 points I mustered, I was doing all right and getting it spot on all the time nearly, and lets think reality, it happens. The one I brushed the barrier, I did feel I was a little far back before I reversed back out, so yeah, my fault, I should've moved forward slightly.

EDIT: The forks do have a side shifter on as well, unfortunately, your not allowed to use it on your test.

And that was that, theory test, multiple choice, piece of wee wee, and, there we go...

I was relieved after the practical though, lol!

Nah, they'll be fork drivers for a long time, theres too many variables in it, its just one of them jobs... Nissan already have autonomous vehicles in the plant for specific looping jobs, like line feeding. You could probably automatise delivery stuff easily enough, but in some cases, it'll just be easier to say to a bloke "Here, theres loads of shit over there a contractor has left lastnight, can you move it to over to there", because said bloke may have to pallatize said shit, he'll have to make sure the load is secure and all that... That'll always need a human element.

Congrats.

I used to have to watch that video every year in an NHS Health & Safety course. We have nothing to do with fork-lifts, but the course tutor liked the video so much he forced everyone to watch it!

Not fork lifts directly, but over here at Port Botany they have a fully automated yard:
