Are there such things as ’’good new comic books’’ these days?

Every week or so, Jo Mallozzi (Writer on Stargate SG1/Atlantis/Universe, and creator of Dark Matter, and more) picks out his favourite covers.

No guarantee the content's any good, though.

I never got into "graphic novels". I was brought up on British comics, where humour takes precedence, and the pictures are usually there to add more humour.

Yeah I've bought comics in the past based on the cover and/or the myriad of variants these day. But it's a shame, the stories or inner art usually don't turn out so great.

So I've learned to only buy based on the story concept and then only if I can find a few sample pages to see how the writer writes and what the inner art is like. But that's so hard to find anymore. And I don't get to a comic shop too often.

So it's a gamble.

I checked out the link and I usually avoid the mainstream stuff from Marvel and DC. I've been burned out on the comic staples for years.

But I too saw the Red Sonja "Mother" Lisner cover and liked that as well. I was a fan of the film and even though I shy away from the overtly sexual covers the mother concept might be something refreshingly different.

The Jules Verne Lighthouse caught my eye as well.

I bought a study book not that long ago that was illustrated with comics. "Grokking algorithms - An illustrated guide for programmers and other curious people" I wish there were more like those.

Depending on your tastes, you might want to check out Blade Devil

Out of some newer and upcoming series, here is a list in no particular order, of what I'm potentially looking at getting for myself and/or the young kids in the family, if anyone is interested in seeing some new stuff. Of course some are ok for kids and some probably not.

Phantom Starkiller, Winchester Mystery House, We Live, West, Time Before Time, Technofreak, Steampunk Snow White, Pellucidar Across Savage Seas, Me You Love in the Dark, Merlin & Hector, Monstrous Heartbreak Blood Loss, Mamo, Lifeformed, Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters, Last Witch, Hard Promises, Getting Dizzy, Claire and the Dragons, Red Sonja "Mother", & Jules Verne Lighthouse

I would also add the Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters & Star Wars Crimson Reign series.
