Socoder -> On Topic -> Would you use Havok?

Free in May
It'd be nice to play around with for a while, but would any of you actually use it?

I probably wouldn't.
To be honest, I'm nowhere near ready to start playing with realistic physics..
If anything, stupidly over-the-top cartoonish arcade like physics would probably be my best aim right now.

I'm seriously considering it. Right now I'm leaning towards PhysX, but with NVidia aquiring them, I'm not so sure now. The primary reason I'm considering Havok is the newly announced Destruction capabilities, but they aren't part of the core sdk, so I'm not sure if it will be available for free like the core sdk. For now, I'll just stick to using some default physics stuff that I will replace later (maybe, depending on how advanced they get in future updates).

Is Havok one of those Drag-And-Drop, gamemaker type things ?.

I don't know Steve.

I now just heard of it and read from the link by Jay.
But I know, they are no free lunches. They may offer it for free in May, but whats the catch?
Thats still around 2 more months or so. Probably just for advertising, public image, and good will and sympathy too.
Catch peoples' attention span and make em sorta feel "hey what a good and nice thing this company is doing".
Lets see what its all about and see if I what it now and/or try it in May. more feeling/thinking: "but hey why free in May?? I like at least some of it. Oh crud, I can't wait...I'll try it now or even get it now"

|edit| got my attention for a few minutes too. Just the usual suspects moving right along... |edit|

So... If it is going to be free in May, what is it price at the moment ?.

Steve, Havok is a physics engine just like Newton, PhysX, and Tokamak. It might have some editor capabilities also, but it is a library you can integrate with your code. Anyways, lots of AAA games are using it. The Halo series uses it for all of its physics, Assasins Creed, Heavenly Sword, and dozens more. Also, it should be pointed out, it will be free for non-commercial use, so anyone can use it in their projects, but if they want to sell it, they have to buy a license (or, Intel has the right to give licenses to projects it feels are worth it)

a price that I cannot afford and is already spent on some other things.

but it will be available for free and for non-commericial use in May. Nothing new. But the price for the commerical version and use. There are components of Havok like Havok FX for under $200 but I don't know what all the components cost nor Havok complete either.
You have to contact the company for the prices for the various products. hmmmmmmmmmmmm???

I know I always say writing your own is fun, but *drools* Havok! The very same engine used in The Matrix: Path of Neo and Half Life 2 (or was that another engine, I forget)

I don't think I have anywhere near the cash for a commercial license of the full engine (what's the estimate on that? "if you have to ask, you can't afford it", maybe?)

But I would very much love to play with it. Heck, if it's not too exorbitantly priced, I'd probably be inspired to get a job!

yeah HoboBen,

if you have to ask or contact the company for the licensing and prices, most likely its highly priced.

I don't want havoc from Havok either.
