Did you try XP 64bit version?

That one was supposed to be able to address 64 exabytes ram if the board allowed.

All these new laptops that have been crippled make me sick. the processor can address 64 exabytes or more but the board bios combination allows only 8gig

Terrible

One things worries me is compatable problem as I dont want move Window 8.1 if there is software compatable problem!

Despite my reluctant and forced move to Windows 8.1 after the death of my Windows 7 laptop, I can actually say I'm pretty happy with it. I've not had a single compatibility problem so far. There are some initial "setting up to get things how you like them" issues, but once it's running nicely you'll really not care that it's not Windows 7.

I still miss the START menu from every Windows since 95, but there's nothing from it that you can't get in other menus.

In fact, pretty much the only thing I've noticed missing in Windows 8.1 is MineSweeper. And load times. Windows 8 loads in under 8 seconds from complete off. Very nice

Windows 8 is awful and it is tablet on laptop! That one of reason why Microsoft made cock up and release Windows 8.1 to have the desktop back to make all the people happy!

I agree Windows 8.0 was awful (the desktop was always there, but it lacked some of the functionality of other Windows platforms), but Windows 8.1 is far better. It's not perfect, but it's not too bad at all. I like it.

It's hardly dead OR unsupported. Windows 8.XX will be supported for the next 10 years, like XP and other Windows before it.

Windows 9 is obviously going to be rushed out to help users sidestep the whole Win8 fiasco, but until then new laptops still come with Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1 as standard.

Yes but some people do not need the updates, they just need their machine running to operate for their businesses or similar.

Many other companies also do the same in other genres and have suffered for the forced move.
AVID is one with their ProTools systems and software. The idea of forcing owners to upgrade was good until all those freeware DAWs came into being and then the company never had the foresight to make changes to their approach for selling or maintaining the product.

The result was that the Freeware DAWs surpassed Prottools with the only reason it still being used widely being the fact that it is the industry standard.
The NYSE has also completely de-listed the product ProTools citing its lack of value.

My point here that MS should use caution when doing this since it too is the industry standard it being installed on nearly everything that is sold new.

Doesn't matter what you want to call it Kuron, Microsoft themselves still call it 8.1 and not "8.1 Update" in Help, DXDiag and everything else that informs you what version of Windows you are running.

Bloody M$

I never use the automatic updates. the first thing that I do when I install or reinstall is to turn off the automatic updates since I just need the machine to do the things I need functionally.
I initially did not want windows 7 at all fearing incompatibilities with my software. Fortunately Windows 7 runs 98 percent of what I need.
windows 8 I will not need, however I did mention that before I had windows 7.
My obtaining a new machine with windows 7 installed was the cause for me to change

Same here for Windows 8.1 with my new lappy. I even asked in the shop if I could get the same machine with Windows 7. Not a chance

For Windows 7 I had to use MSPaint from XP, as Win7 MSPaint has the new "ribbon bar" system. Win7 SoundRecorder was completely different.

So, other than those two programs, I've not run into any Win8 problems. And then it's becuase of changes to them, rather than the OS as Win8.xx runs them fine.

And yes, "8.2" would have made more sense than "8.1 Update" But then I never understood the point of calling an update "Service Pack X".

But this is M$ for you. I'd still rather Windows than OSX though.

And as for the API excuse for not stating "Windows 8.1 Update" within the software; M$ wrote the bloody thing - there's no reason they can't change that!
