Welcome to Socoder.
Socoder is the spiritual third in line in a list of websites starting with BlitzCoder.
If you enjoyed the friendlyness of people there, or at CodersWorkshop, you'll find yourself at home, here, too.
Much like Blitzcoder and CodersWorkshop, this site features a Showcase area to place all your coded creations. It also contains a Blitzcoder style Article and Tutorial section, as well as a Code Snippets area. The combination of these sections lets you use this site however you wish. Be it just a place to come and chat, or your main programming website.
More features will be added to the site as they're thought up. In the meantime, get settled, and enjoy your stay.
What does it all do?
Home : This takes you to the front page of the site, with the latest Showcases, compos, and a shoutbox, all displayed in a simple manner. If you leave this open in a tab, the two sidebars will constantly refresh, allowing you to lazily pop back to check on the latest topics.
Forum : This is the main chunk of the website, where you'll be doing the normal Forum like things.
Notepad : Post things to your notepad, and you can retrieve them later. Only you can access your notepad.
Blog : This is your blog. Use it wisely!
Profile : From here, you can change your avatar, real name, homepage and other occasionally useful info.
Uploads : You can upload files here, be it silly pictures you found online, or your latest game. Whatever! Ignore silly Happy-Upload-File-Adriddled-Happy sites, and stick to this! It does the job..
Site Theme : This is where you go if you want to change the way the site looks. There are many options to choose from.
MudChat : A basic chatroom.
PM's : This is where your Private Messages are stored. To create a PM, look for the small PM icon in a user's "Garden Bar" (The small list of icons below a user's post)
Wed.Workshop : Every Wednesday a small task is set. To code a game with a given theme, within the next 7 days. Any entries will then be judged by the community. There's no prizes involved, it's just for fun... Usually when you're bored.
Showcases : If you create something really great, post it to the showcase, where we can all download it, play with it, and then leave comments about it.
Articles and Tutorials : If you think you can help other people on the forum to learn things about coding, you can write a whole article, or series of articles, and post it into this section. The more the merrier, as long as they're useful!
Code Snippets : If you've created a set of really handy functions, or a nice graphical effect, and you think that other people might like to use it in their programs, you can post the code into this section.
Campfire : If you have a small unfinished project that you're never going to finish off, stick it in here. Using the comments area, other members will be able to download the program, add to it, and then post new versions back up. The original poster will then have a choice of whether to set users versions as "True Updates" or otherwise.
Link Archive : This is where you can post links, whether they be useful links full of art and sound for games, links to tutorials, or even just links to silly news stories and flash games..
Scoreboards : If you want an online scoreboard for your latest project, you can use the Socoder boards to do it..
SoCoder?
As in "I am So [a] Coder"...
.. You'll get used to it
Additionally, SoCoder has little to do with Google's Summer of Code (SoC) except for the whole coding thing.. Some of the Google Summer of Code peeps are starting to name themselves SoCoders.. If they'd like to sign up, they're more than welcome to. Just, you know.. don't baffle us!! |
