DScovered - WIP (was DS cover flow)

Over the past few days, I have started work on Coverflow DS (name may change later). Basically, much like DSision and DSision2, I am trying to make loading files on the DS look better. This idea, as you can tell, is based on the iPod/iPhone/iTunes coverflow menu system.

This one comes with a nice little app, to make transferring cover images to the ds easier, by correctly formatting the images for you.

Currently working are -
Coverflow part working fine (scrolling/animating etc.)
Loading of homebrew.
App for setting up the covers.

Yes, I know the icon on the lower screen doesn't match the upper screen, the lower screen only a mockup, the top screen however, is a genuin screengrab.

Thanks to anyone who has helped so far.

What do you think? should I keep working on it?

|update|
I might have finished...

With things fixed such as dshc support and booting stuff through an external loader, it should now be future proof and updatable.

You should change the name.
When I saw the blogpost I thought it said 'Cowerflow' and wondered if Cower had started working on a DS game.

---Update---

The cover importer works a bit better, no longer do I need to put up with the default ordered dither to websafe palette. Now it saves 8bit bmp with averaged palette! I should probably throw some error diffusion in there too, just to make it look a little nicer.

This looks like a nice small professionally made app, not yet another homebrew one. I'm really impressed.

Yeay! Great vid, and a nice neat little menu up top, too.

OK guys, here is the first alpha release. Don't expect moonshell2 or anything, most of the features don't work yet, all you have is loading, no favourites, no settings, no information etc.

Here it the .nds, just extract everything to the root of your card.
DScovered (Nds app)

You will also need to use the windows app to set up the covers, there are thousands of commercial covers in here, plus a handful of homebrew ones.
DScovery (windows app)

As I said, this is just alpha, don't expect windows7 or anything

Spinal! Great job! Although you dont know me, i've looked at DSision 2 and DiagnoseS and loved them. Do you think you could make DScovered browes through folders too so that we could put games somewhere other that the root. Otherwise great work! I love it.

Hey Spinal.

Love the work mate.

Could I ask if you are able to set it up so that when u hit the games button on the main menu it goes to DSCovered. It would be so much easier for my boy to load games like this.

At the mo he has to goto a games folder.

I set my wii up with wiiflow and he loves it

Hope to hear back soon

You didn't mention which card you use, but as you mention the 'games button' I will assume it's an R4. If it is real R4 (as opposed to a clone of a different card) then you can try replacing your firmware with this. Remember to make a backup of your current firmware first though.
It will jump straight into DScovered when you card boots up.

Sorry I forgot to put that in my post spinal. Yes i'm using an R4. It is definatly genuine. I am also using firmware 1.27 and moonshell 2.

You say it will boot up as soon as the DS boots but I also want to watch the films and read the books I have from the multimedia button on the menu, hence why I asked if you can load DSCovered from the game button rathr than a straight boot up?

Ah.
As far as I know, you cant change the function of the game button.
You should be able to load the multimedia app from DScovered though. Just tick _DS_MSHL.nds in the list when setting up DScovered through DScovery.exe

You can download a guide for setting up DScovered from here It has links to the latest downloads too.

Try putting ysmenu.ini in the root of your card and not in the ttds/ysmenu folder.

I had a idea how about a info screen on the top screen but you don't have to have it up you can switch between the launch game screen and info screen...what you think..??

Good idea..

I made a request in the shout box... Please make this the UNofficial site, just because my website is currently down, does not make it OK for others to claim to be the official site for any of my work.

Could you share the code that gets the acekard2i to boot a game or is it on socode somewhere..?
Monday, 23 May 2011, 08:13
spinal
I don't think it works on acekard anymore, but it's simple enough, have a look through some of the akaio ini files, some of them set which game to load on startup, just add some code to change which game it is.
Tuesday, 24 May 2011, 00:05
spanner
Yeah it only works on AKAIO 1.7.1 and run all my roms with no problem..
Thursday, 02 June 2011, 05:48

How about making DScovery a rom manager too...??

Not going to happen, I have given up on the project. Also, I have lost the source for DSCovery, so it would mean starting again, which I don't want to do.

Hi there,are you still here..?
I still using this on my DSi XL,shame you lost the code,if I knew how to make this I would.I still using my Acekard 2i just don't update the DSi.

The windows app don't download the covers no more so have to add them manually.
Friday, 21 July 2017, 00:24
spinal
Yeah, the website that I was grabbing the cover images from is no longer hosting them, I don't have an offline copy either.
Saturday, 22 July 2017, 18:19
spanner
Yeah you can add them anyway no problem there..
Its a shame it don't work with AKAIO 1.9.0,is it because of the loaders or something, is there a way to get it to work..?

What did you use to make discovery.exe and the DS part, maybe I could learn and to do it, have you got any source code of it left at all, its was one of the best things you made for the DS and its was handy too..what we needed for the menu replacement.. my grand son who is 4 love it, it so easy to pick a game and play.
Sunday, 23 July 2017, 00:50
spinal
I think I might have the DS code, but not the code for the exe. Shame, really because thats the important part.
Sunday, 23 July 2017, 08:17
spanner
Well I would need to worry now about updates just need DScovered.nds to work with 1.9.0 and I be happy,AKAIO 1.7.1 don't play the last of the Layton games,1.9.0 does so at the moment have to keep swapping the firmwares round to play the last 2 games.but all the other game I have on my dsi work with DScovered.

Are you not coding anymore...?I still have the website I made for DScovered on my backup HD.I might host it sometime.. shame this couldn't be updated so it work with the latest fashcards,it has a better menu system than the flashcards do now.do you still have a ds..?
Sunday, 23 July 2017, 09:55
spinal
I still have my dslite somewhere, but I don't have any of the software installed, nor do I have any idea where the source code might be.
Sunday, 23 July 2017, 10:49
spanner
I only just got a DSi from eBay, well got two, they was faulty and I fixed one, I got two DSis to make a good as new DSi,going to put mine in a Mario DSi..

If you make something always upload the code somewhere so its safe.
Sunday, 23 July 2017, 10:50
spanner
What programs did you use to make DS part and the Windows part, did you use .Net for windows part..?
Sunday, 23 July 2017, 12:22
spinal
yup, .net for windows, devkitpro for ds, possibly palib also, I really cant remember now.
Monday, 24 July 2017, 09:21
spanner
How does it load a game, trying to find out why it don't load a game with AKAIO 1.9.0 it works ok with 1.7.1 so what's changed, I see it has its own loader (loader_akaio.nds) would it be that, dose that need updating, I don't know cos I need to know how it loads a game..??

Did you make that loader nds file..?

All it does is when I press A to load a game it goes black then white then AKAIO menu comes up and that's it...
Monday, 24 July 2017, 10:42
spinal
from what I remember, the platform_loader.nds is just the homebrew loader that you should have no problem finding the source for, but it reads through your cards .ini file (can't remember what it might be called on acekard) and edits the autoload line to that of the game you want to load, then launches the cards official loader, in this case akaio.
I can't remember how I checked for the correct line in the .ini to change, there might be a second .ini file that goes with the akaio_loader.nds, or a .dat or something like that.
Monday, 24 July 2017, 15:13
spanner
I have a lastsave.ini file and it says...

there is a globalsettings.ini in the firmware but that's it.

Done some more tests its down to the akmenu.nds and ak2loader.nds they have been changed in 1.9.0 there files size has changed too.it just the 2 prof Layton games that don't load 1.7.1

5953 - Professor Layton and the Spectres Call (E)(EXiMiUS)
5295_-_Professor_Layton_and_the_Lost_Future_EUR_NDS

all other games I have on my sd card load fine on 1.7.1 .
