Vista isn't bad, and apparently I'm the only person on this planet who actually likes Vista.

Oh, and:
Microsoft "We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided to remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks."

2 weeks..?!?!

Come on new PC!!!! You've a deadline!!

So, those who've tried it.. They've not done one of those "Fooled you!" things and actually just rebranded Vista, again, have they?!

To be honest, Vista hasn't really given me that many problems. Well, until New Year's Eve. Then it just broke. AARGGGHH!

It's nots just vista with makeup. This is a pretty good OS. You'll have to take my word on it. They made it a lot easier and cleaner looking.

If you're curious, grab yourself a beta copy.

I can't.. My A) PC's dead, and my B) has about 1.3Gb left!!
And, quite frankly, I'd rather not bugger up the B just yet, as it's my only Net access!

I can't get online with Windows 7...a missing driver issue I guess. But where do I find a driver?

Easy, use a Vista driver.

If the driver doesn't run, use compatibility mode for Vista.

I had your problem, but Vista drivers got it all working.

The all important stuff...

1. Does Blitz (+Cobra, since Graham's still peeking his head in) work on Win7?
2. Do the folders still randomly pick their views even though you've explicitly told them "Details" a thousand times?
3. Do folders randomly decide that they should display themselves as a playlist, as opposed to a folder, just because they happen to have an MP3 in them?

I've now gotten my laptop back and installed Windows 7, and I like it To answer Jayenkai's questions, from what I can tell:

1. This works, so I don't see why not:
> Reveal 🔎
2. Seems to be working.
3. Seems to be working.

|edit| Graham, do you want me to see if Cobra works as well? If so, then just tell me. |edit|

I've got my Vista nForce4 hardware drivers installed, yet I keep getting a "network cable is unplugged" error.

One thing that bugs me is that I get a Windows Defender popup every time I use it... and I can't figure out how to turn it on!

I guess I missed the boat for replies, but I've been using the Windows 7 beta since yesterday, so:

1. It's running *very* smoothly and responsively on a 1.8GHz single-core Celeron with 2GB of RAM and integrated Intel graphics, with all graphical features turned on except for the transparent titlebars (more because those irk me than because they're slow.) "Non-game" performance is comparable to XP, but is more responsive when the HD is being accessed extensively. Game performance is better than Vista's, but not quite up to XP's level either.

2. Software compatibility has not substantially worsened or improved since Vista.

3. Hardware support is hugely improved. I did not have to manually install a single driver.

4. The new taskbar is much more intuitive than I had expected. I actually really like it, but I feel kind of dirty about it.

5. DirectDraw (and therefore "Blitz Classic") support is iffy. I'm not sure if that's the way it was in Vista or not.

6. There are a lot of bugs in the beta that they had best be fixing before the final release. Desktop Gadgets do not function properly, (they teleport your mouse pointer when you hover over them? D but that's okay since I don't use them. What's NOT okay is that deleting folders seems to be broken right now.

I am strongly considering upgrading to Windows 7 when it comes out. This means a lot coming from me -- I absolutely abhorred Vista.

I still cant get my gfx chips to work under win7, mostly because they refuse to make 'vista' drivers for the damn thing(s). bah.
