KorgGadget to Ableton

I just finished off the last choon from the Bitter ALBum.
"Bitter Zazz" will be formally released on Wednesday, but it's in the Complete Album zip already, because it's frustratingly hard to do zip file management on a Mac!

Earlier on in the year, I suggested that this would probably be my last ALBum using KorgGadget, and that I'd be shifting over to Ableton for future ALChoons.
It's not that KorgGadget is bad. It's really a fantastic tool with tons of great synths, but over the past couple of years, there's been barely ANY new Synths/Gadgets for it. Everything's been sampled sounds via the Korg Module app, and its just started to get really boring.
Simple things like "STILL NO FOLDERS?!" and no easy pitch gliding, as well as other fairly basic functions, are still missing and I don't know why.

In the time since making my decision, I've been building up a decent set of audio samples and VST synths from the FutureMusic and ComputerMusic magazines, as well as trawling the net for additional synths.
I've added a bunch of free synths from FullBucket as well as paying for the Purity Synth which includes a TON of instruments, as well as a much needed full General Midi set.

I've spent the past few months getting to grip with Ableton Live 11 Lite.
It's good enough, but has some annoying limitations like only being able to have a limited number of tracks. (The version from Computer Music magazine allowed 8 tracks.)

...So... I splashed out on Ableton 11 Live Standard, which has got to be one of my most expensive purchases in pissing years.

-=-=-

Handy thing to note, though. If you open KorgGadget, and try to Export to Ableton, it'll give you directions to get a download key for an Ableton Lite edition. Owning that in your Ableton Account will then give you a small discount should you decide to upgrade to Standard.
.. .. There's also a more expensive "Suite" edition, which includes "Max for Live" (*shrugs*), but fuck that price..

Good grief, even if I want to upgrade from Standard to Suite, it still costs another sodding £249..
Nope..
Nooooope...

So, yeah, that's me spent up now.
But it's June, and I don't expect to be spending any cash for the next few months. Xmas is half a year away, Zelda BOTW2's nowhere to be seen, all is golden..
(This is usually when something techy breaks and I have to inexplicably fork out for things I didn't need a week earlier!)

-=-=-

So, yeah..
That's that for Korg Gadget.
I'll leave it on the iPad, and likely fiddle with little ditties on it, but other than that it's been a good amount of time, well spent, with Gadget.

27th January 2014 -> 26th June 2022 : Approximately 936 tracks, everything from Conspicuous onward.

Farewell, Gadget!

I'm expecting a real good dalle e for music this year tbh. I was also looking at pixel art created by dall e. There are some really impressive things being generated.

I think I will not spend a lot on instruments and other software anymore. Just going to try and improve prototyping games and maybe some tools.

Microsoft's codepilot is also showing that coding is getting more ai powered.

I'm ok with the robot takeover. I'll happily keep scribbling crap, and then, wherever possible, see if the robots can make things better.
If I can get an AI to tweak my music and make it sound epic, then who am I to complain.
As long as I still get to "do" something in the creative process, that's all I need. The more toys the better.

Take today's Platdude Pixelart, for example..

It's all just more knobs to twiddle when I'm bored!

I watched a review on the new macbook. Seems Apple has been cheaping out on parts. The old m1 can handle music apps better. If you need to replace your macbook before the m3 is out. Then check reviews. They advice the old m1.

Yeah, the improvements, although nice, feel kinda like how the iPhones feel. Every other one feels like an incremental step. It'll be M3 before it feels "Super" compared to M1.
Either that or the M2 pro, but then you're quickly heading into silly prices!

The base M1 Air (Which is still available on the Apple site for £999) is still a perfectly suitable system, and is happily ploughing on with every task that I give it, with a battery life that .. just keeps on going!!
The one downside is definitely the speakers.
Maybe mine are faulty.. I sure hope they are, because if every M1 Air is this bad, then .. that's a bad design!!

Oh my god, the Backups!!

Today I discovered that Ableton is backing up projects EVERY TIME I SAVE.
And it's not rotating the backups, it's just making more and more and more and more and more..

A quick script that scours the current folder and all subfolders for /Backup/ folders, then deletes all the backups backed up in the backup folder.
If you're like me, and are hopping between half a dozen quick test projects whilst learning how to use Ableton, and you have a habit of hitting Ctrl+S every few minutes, then you'll likely already have OVER 800Mb of random backup files scattered all throughout your Ableton save folder!!

Also, if you're anything like me, you'll probably never actually need those, because your music creation evolves in a forward direction, and very rarely do you ever go back.
I wrote the above script, ran it, and my entire Ableton Projects folder is now 32Mb..
That's a lot smaller!!
A LOT smaller!!!

I had that with Openmodplug tracker a long time ago. They added a auto save. It saved a new copy of the file every 5 minutes. Back then drives were not large. A xm file could get megabytes in size without problems too. I still have some of those 5 minute backups in my archives

"Variable Atmosphere"

First proper attempt at an ALChoon in Ableton

It started out reminding me of that Amiga 'Hook' soundtrack. It got a bit repetitive in the middle. The jungle drums? are nice and energetic.

Sounds like you and ableton can get along

"Variable Beast"

Second attempt with Ableton, lyrics done using Emvoice (Lucy voice)

I found it MUCH easier to do the lyrics in this. Previous attempts at lyrics have been a case of having Vocaloid on the Mac, and KORG Gadget on the iPad, doing a bit of lyrics, rendering to wav, copying bit by bit because Gadget can't handle long waves, then piecing it all back together again, and .. if I needed to tweak, going back to square one..
It wasn't pleasant.

This time, editing live, listen, tweak, repeat.
Much quicker to do, and I think the results are infinitely better.

Thoughts appeciated.

Sound nice.

Vocals are usually done with some fx. I keep wanting to try out that telephone fx. There's bunches of effects for vocals.

Layering multiple vocals. The same lyrics but in the background with different vocal styles are also common. Think chorus. This fills up the audio space.

Yeah, I'll have to get into layering vocals, later.
The most difficult part right now is writing lyrics. I'm shit at that bit!

Rhyme dictionary!

Jayenkai
Rhyming's not an issue for me, it's just that whenever I try to write songs they're either about obscure incidents that only people who follow AGameAWeek would understand (see AGameAWeek Poetry of the Day) or typically end up about hamsters, ducks, or eating chocolate.. .. Or fish...
I'm shit at coming up with song ideas!

Maybe you can practice it(more). When I listen to some instrumental music. Sometimes I do freestyle lyrics in thought during those. I just pick a word. Say dark. And create lyrics based on dark associations and words rhyming on those.

I barely ever listen to music with actual singing. If I do I sometimes also replace and/or sing along in my mind and do my own lyrics.

And to be honest. i never heard a song with interesting lyrics. "Mama, i killed a man?"-queen

Again using Emvoice's Lucy voice. Hopefully this one won't get a frickin' takedown request!!

Back in 2019, I hopped over to the Luma Fusion forum, and asked about getting waveforms, vectorscopes, spectrums and the like into Luma Fusion.
Unsure what I meant (!!!?!?) I ended up explaining how they could be done in a simple method, if we could access the audio's "Peak" values, and send them into various parameters of the effects..
And then I sat back and waited..

Today I asked again, and the answer was pretty much a big no.

So, fuck it. Time to play with something else.

Apple have what is essentially a "Final Cut Mini" product called "Motion".
It's meant for creating little mini clips that you can render and import into Final Cut or whatever other video editor you have.
It can do 3D titles, motion tracking and quite a lot of other cool stuff should I bother to really look into it.

It's powerful enough that it can happily render little basic videos, and it also has the ability to take the volumes and frequencies of the audio, and send those values to the parameters of the effect generators.
This is almost exactly what I asked Luma for, 3 years ago.
Crikey.. Has this been here all along?! If only I knew. :/

Test clip.

AL has now had so much money spent on him, this year, that it's absolutely ludicrous.
I'm kinda jealous if I'm honest.

Lazy video, this week.. Mostly because I only started the choon about 2pm, today!
Hastily cobbled together, like all good ALChoons.

Ableton Tip : Shift-Clicking to select multiple channels

I previously thought this wasn't do-able, because I was clicking on A, then Shift-Clicking on B, as you do, and nothing happened.
You need to Shift-Click A, then Shift-Click B.
It only works if you Shift-Click both sides of the shift-click region.
*sigh*

Ran out of ideas for lyrics, this week, so went to the OpenAI Playground and asked it to write me some soothing meditation instructions, then threw those into a Text to Speech thing, and smooshed it into the ALChoon.
Job done!
The instrumental version can be heard here
