Found this posted on /r/gamedev today. It can generate normal maps from a flat image basically by magic.

Hmm,.
Its been so long since I did anything in 3D, I’m struggling to remember what exactly a normal map is for..
Lightmap, bumpmap, texturemap, heightmap... .. but a normal map..? Hmm...

Basically a normal map allows you to add subtle 3d detail at texture level. Think of a brick wall texture, completely flat. You can use a normal map to give 3d depth between the faces of the bricks and mortar between.
