I agree on C being the best. But I prefer ISO (C99) to ANSI (C89). Those // comments are just so awesome.

As long as you don't modify the partition where the recovery is, it will all be good. You'll still be able to access the contents, as long as you know where they are.
If you have a spare partition, you can just point the Ubuntu installer at the empty spac*snip*
