JUGS!

Many years ago, I had a lil problem with the auld alcohol, to the point where 10 pints a day was pretty normal. When I worked out that I was pissed for probably 80% of the time I was at home, I managed to cut that out by replacing it with something else - Cola, in this case. I then went through a phase of getting through about four litres (two full bottles) of the shit every day. So really just swapped one evil for another.

So I replaced that with juice - the dilute stuff like Robinson's and the like... but I *really* hate tap water - I always have. So that didn't last long. I tried bottled water but I was getting through so much of it, it was, shall we say, logistically difficult. so I ended up back with the Cola.

To cut a long-ish story short, I've been considering one of those water filter jugs for a few months now... so when it came to light last week that even bottled water now has microplastics floating about in it, I did a bit of reseach and bought one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N9BU0XE

It holds 1.4 litres of filtered water, and is just the right size to fit in the fridge door. Though I found it was kinda heavy to be leaving in the door, as well as the milk in there, so I've got it stood on the shelf now. Doesn't take a lot of space up, either way. It doesn't take long to filter, either. A litre of tap water will filter through in 3-4 minutes.

We're always led to believe that tap water is pretty clean anyway, but I'm massively surprised at the difference this makes. We have very hard water here and if you look closely at a glass of tap water, you can see thousands of tiny particles of.... something, floating about in it. Water from the jug is crystal clear. On top of that, there's the smell. The filtered water doesn't smell of anything, and I never noticed before but tap water has a really nasty chlorine smell. It absolutely fucking stinks of it.

You do need to replace the filter cartridge every four weeks, so they say. There's a timer on the jug that you reset when you change the cartridge and it tells you when it's time to replace, (purely time-based), but many people say that the jug will filter for far longer than that in most cases, and the worst case scenario if the filter really is done, is tap water in, tap water out. None of the filtered shit will get back into the water that you put in.

The filters are generally about £4-6 each, depending on how many you buy at once. A pack of 12 for £49 seems to be about the best value. Even if I were to buy two bottles of the cheapest 20p bottled water per day, that still comes to over £12 a month, so I'm still better off.

As I get older I find I'm starting to think more and more about what sort of rubbish I'm shovelling into myself, and I'm proper pleased with this. Wish I'd bought one years ago.

The water in Bolton seems to be nice and "soft", and we've never needed any kind of filter or anything.
It's weird how many people have complimented our water when visiting!

Nearly makes it worth the sheer insane prices we're paying for it.

... Nearly..

We're paying £240 a year for ours - water rates, no water meter.

And that's with a 50% reduction because we have a septic tank instead of sewers.

AND THE WATER IS SHIT!!

I had my first beer of the year yesterday.

This year I have mostly been drinking bitter lemmon and ice tea. Also those Monster Energy Drinks are quite nice.

Water, nah

Can't be doing with them energy drinks. Apart from first thing in a morning I generally try to avoid caffeine as much as possible. Overdose of coffee was another vice I had to shake off at one point - caffeine causes stress and all sorts of problems if you aren't careful.

Our water down here is fucking hard shite. Pour it from the top and you can hammer a nail in with it!

I tried a Britta filter many, many years ago and found that the water tasted awful - it had a fake, carbon, flat flavour. Perhaps that's the real flavour of water and the shit I drink is full of artificial gunk.

I've never been a bottled water fan. I don't drink alcohol at all, and only once in a blue moon have a fizzy drink (I prefer lemonade to Coke/Pepsi) or squash. I do like fruit juices, but they are really crap for the teeth and I'd much rather eat the fruit than drink it anyway.

Tea. Is pretty much my be-all and end-all. I drink gallons of it. And none of that caffeiene free shite either - I CAN tell the difference.

I have never tried an energy drink - just the smell makes my teeth rot and I don't feel I need the excess caffeine they offer.

Yeah, I'm a cheap date!

Apparently (so sayeth the instructions) if the water tastes of carbon or has black bits in, you didn't prime the filter properly.

Ours is okay up here, out of all "pop", dilutey is my preference, mostly though, I'm tea, but on a cold day, too much and it makes me piss like a busted dam, coffee for whatever reason, I'm fine with.

And I'm one of them that can have 20 litres of coffee, and still manage to nod off, it doesnt really give me that boosty thing people get, I just like a one on a morning with my first ciggie, not for a "hit", just cos of habit!

Alcohol wise, lager usually, prefer Peroni to Fosters or Carling, but if there's bottled peroni on the cold shelf, I'll get that over a pint of the latter two... Cannot stand Carlsberg or Heineken or other shite like that... Amstel can bugger off, its awful. Some places, very rare though, have Superbock or Sagres, which is Portuguese... I like them... Oh, and Asahi, thats lovely as well.

Wine wise, red all the way, Shiraz or Malbec, I can pound that stuff like ribena, white is too sweet and I dont like champagne.

Spirits, I can drink vodka, but its got to be something like grey goose, mostly with fresh orange in, or lemon and lime... Another downfall of mine is whiskey, I had to reel that in, I could drink a bottle of Laiphroig in one evening, and still have time for more... It was getting a hold, so, I weaned myself off it, and now only have the stuff when its for the road.

So, there we are... My liquid preferences!

I’ve been drinking a lot of Peach Barley Water, lately. Not sure why, but seems to be a slight addiction!!
Other than that, coffee, or occasionally a hot chocolate, but too much chocolate gives me migraines, so not a lot of that!!

Re: "Priming the filters" We followed the instructions with the jug/filters. Dunno. It was in the very early days of filtration, so perhaps things are much better now.

Any thing like puratap in the UK? We have it here in South Oz, the filters last a year or more. It's connected directly to your outlet say under your kitchen sink, then you use the pura tap which outputs filtered water, so no jugs!

A quick google suggests "nothing" between Shire and County.
Just a different word.
