My motherboard crapped itself and died yesterday and not I'm running a really crap temporary system with one core, that's a big letdown from the 8 that I'm used to.

You'll have to go bargain laptop hunting some time!

I've got a laptop that my mate Stuart's mum gave me just after he died, problem is all my projects stuff is on a secondary drive. Even if I put my SSD in the laptop I would still have a skettifest of wires for powering up the other drive.

Maybe time to look at getting an NAS enclosure? That way you can stick the old secondary drive into that, instead, and then access it from your network.
Haven't ever bought "just an enclosure" before, though, so... Wouldn't know what are good/bad choices in that department.

Is it possible to replace the motherboard like for like or similar? I know Windows 10 is pretty crazy good when it comes to replacing parts on a system.

Just found this on ebay, the seller offered it to me for £59.99 so I grabbed it. Similar specs to the ROG board that went tits up.

Very glad you could find a compatible MB at a decent price. Often hard to find one that is not current. Although I am lappy only now, I always had good luck with Gigabyte MBs.

I'm hoping it doesn't get busted in the post.

Back when I had to get a replacement keyboard for my deceased wife's laptop, it took five tries to get one that was in one piece. No matter where you ordered from, they were sticking a new laptop keyboard in a large envelope and sending it on its way.

Hoping the replacement will work well.

My main puter died last week also, although I think it's just from overheating again so I'll give it a clean out one evening this week, hooked up the ol Lenovo 2nd gen intel i5 up to two monitors, 16gb of DDR3 RAM and it does the job just as well. I might just stick with that as it uses way lesss power than the main stack and I'm not doing anything that requires a beefy graphics card currently.

Those specs look similar to min except mine was AMD FX8350

Noice, similar processor also, ha! I think mine had 3 cores though but 6 threads, so, possibly a bit older than yours, best of luck on the re-fit

That's it sorted, until I get a suitable case it'll just have to sit in the nude.
