20W energy-saving light bulb just went BANG! Never had that happen before. Only got 8W ones left now it's like sitting in a fecking cave :/

Finally bought a new bulb today! Plumped for an LED one.... 1500 lumens or so, cost me £8. o_O

But at last I CAN SEE AGAIN! It better not pop after 6 months at that ruddy price.

How much?!! Blimey.
But, yeah, I much prefer LED bulbs over those crappy CFL ones.

As bulbs go, it's a bit pricey. As LED bulbs go... I dunno? I've seen ones cheaper, and a lot more expensive.

This one surprised me with how heavy it is, compared to a regular energy-saving bulb. Plus the lightey-up bit is quite big, about the size of a tennis ball.

We got one of those fangled smart meter thingies at the end of last year and since then we've tried to keep a lid on how much energy we use. It hits home when the thingy shows you're using 1p/hour "ambient" (fridge, freezer, stuff that's perma-on). Whack the kettle on - 50p/hour! Electric shower - £1/hour! Fair do's you don't use those things for an hour at a time but it gives you a wake-up call to how much leccy you're actually getting through.

Last winter, E-On wanted to put my monthly leccy payments up from £65to £97 but I said "hang on, I'm doing all this stuff to save power - I'm not going to use that much". And they said OK we'll see how it goes. Had a letter last week saying they're reducing my payments to £47. \o/

We've had triple glazing installed in the last two years, and thermoshell wall insulation (old building, no cavity walls), and basically chopped our fuel bill in half.

Yeah. Kettles are ludicrous. We need to find a better method for that!!

I found that one cup in the microwave is better than one cup in the kettle, but also that filling the kettle up fully uses less energy when you come to make your next bru, since the water's already warm. I always fill the kettle first thing in the morning, much to the objection of my sister, who whinges that you should "only boil what you need.."

I had one go bang about 5 years ago and it caught fire, good fucking job I was home when it happened. It was one of those bulbs that the council were distributing to encourage CFL usage back in the day.
