Mastodon Mallet


For the past week or so, we've been getting massive chunks of site-hammering, and I've been trying to figure out what's causing it.

.. It's Mastodon.

I just posted a link to AGameAWeek Mastodon, and then watched the stats, and ....



Blammo...
Each and every single mastodon server is trawling the page, one by one, as the link gets served through the various servers.
Absolutely HAMMERING the server, with each one looking for a "what is this page about, and how can I make a thumbnail?" thing to add to the server's display.
MASSIVE hit on the server, any time anyone posts any kind of link.

I've used agent-blocking, and the site now sends "SoCoder - For Coders who love Sidebars" to any servers using "http.rb" in the Agent String. If it gets any worse I'll start adding others in, too.
For now, that seems to be working well enough.

 		Indeed and I appreciate the heads up as I will eventually need to do something for my site since I will use Mastodon.

Seems one of the "issues" with the structure of Mastodon -- each instance maintaining its own server and own lists of sites to hammer. :c/
