Martian Water: Real + Confirmed!

NASA Spacecraft Confirms Martian Water, Mission Extended

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Laboratory tests aboard NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander have identified water in a soil sample. The lander's robotic arm delivered the sample Wednesday to an instrument that identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples.

"We have water," said William Boynton of the University of Arizona, lead scientist for the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer, or TEGA. "We've seen evidence for this water ice before in observations by the Mars Odyssey orbiter and in disappearing chunks observed by Phoenix last month, but this is the first time Martian water has been touched and tasted."

I don't get it, doesn't mars have ice caps? surely that would be proof of water?

Yeah, but the "ice" might not have been "H2o"-ish water ice..
Now, I guess they're quite happy that it might very well in all likely hood just possibly maybe be "H2o"-ish water ice!

yeay!

Another recent article I read said that the water is most likely so salty and acidic, that it's pretty much poison. Not that I planned on drinking it or anything...

Here.

I never understood why scientists believe water is a first sign of potential life. The way I see it, this only applies to Earth, because life here evolved to require it. Alien biology could be completely different.
