She is wrong, however the notion that Linux has no costs is also wrong. Infact I'd say it has more hidden and indirect costs then MS products because there is no direct support and maintenance structure for many products.

But I also find it dissappointing that the blogger makes such sweeping statements about Microsoft and the education systems around the world.

Because I'm a student I own almost every version of Windows from XP Home onwards (including server and embedded editions), multiple versions of Visual Studio Proffessional and multiple database and server products, all for free. This is thanks to the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA).

Because I'm a student I can get 90% off Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate edition thanks to Microsoft's The Ultiamte Steal program (I can get even more off if it's only for 1 year, I believe it's around 10-15 pounds).

Because I'm a student I can also be a free member of the XNA game creators club for 1 year allowing me to make and distribute XBox 360 games thanks to Microsoft's Dreamspark program. It also offers Visual Studio Proffessional, several copies of Windows Server and several copies of Microsoft SQL server.

Sun Microsystems have certified my university as being a 'Sun Certified Campus', give talks every year and support projects that take place there. According to some polls Sun Microsystems is not only the largest supporter of open source software, but gives more support then the next top 4 supporters combined.

So far I have received 2 pieces of software from Sun Microsystems. One was a copy of NetBeans that I applied for on the NetBeans site. The other was a beta version of one of the Open Solaris' in response to applying for a job at Sun Microsystems with one of the Solaris teams. Neither had anything to do with me being a student and both are completely free to the entire public. So unlike Microsoft they have never given me any software that is proprietry or to benefit my studies.

One of our lecturers also wanted to give out free copies of Ubuntu to all the students in a lecture. However when he requested dvd copies of them from Cononical he was only offered 3 or 4 (far from the numbers he needed). I'd like to point out again that all these students (and more) already have access to almost 10 copies of Windows (and many other products), each, for free.

This is just my own personal experience and so does not including the many other things that Microsoft are doing in the rest of the world in the name of education, such as the Microsoft funded school they setup in New York.

His insinuations that Microsoft only take and do not give to the education systems around the world are just false.

This teacher has some issues with reality.

Also saying that linux isn't even competition to Microsoft is stupid. Microsoft's OS share has been dropping steadily with Ubuntu and Mac OS X taking more of the market share. Windows has dipped below 90%, the lowest in a long time.

Woah... that teacher is pretty dumb.

As for that link on the hacking troll, I quickly scanned through it, and the one thing that caught my eye was this:
Quake is an online virtual reality used by hackers. It is a popular meeting place and training ground, where they discuss hacking and train in the use of various firearms.

Ok, seriously, WHAT?

It's all malicious, also watch out for anything that sounds like it may be edible (Java...), or has an animal or other scratchwork published on the front of the book, they are works of the devil!!!!

I once brought home the "Ruby Cookbook" from the library and it has a fox on the front. My housemate thought it was a real cookbook at first and was worried that it might have recipies about foxes.

That's kinda sad, really. Kinda shows you how backwards some older people can be. I mean, I can understand her confiscating the disks if it were disturbing class, but to claim that there's something illegal going on about free software is nonsense. I just hope someone explains the truth about Linux.

Microsoft does offer their software through the MSDNAA program to students, this is all of their products except for the Office products: Excel, Word, Powerpoint.

As I pointed out above, you can get Office pretty damn cheap if your a student.

In PCWorld MicroSoft Office (Student Edition) was £99 about 8 months ago. Do you mean that you can get it cheaper than that, if you are a registered student ?.

It looks like PCWorld have dropped the price by a couple of quid !

Yes, because I'm a student I can get the Ultimate edition for 39 pounds. You can see at the The Ultimate Steal. Pretty sure you can also buy a one year license on the site which is even cheaper.

@Jay

A useful bbcode tag would be a [currency] tag. I have no idea how much a quid is worth, and it would be handy if the site automatically converted it to US dollars. (And for UK people, vis-versa.)
Wednesday, 17 December 2008, 21:03
steve_ancell
Quid is UK slang for Pound £1.00 GBP.

|edit| Sometimes, the UK also refer to the pound as a Nicker. |edit|

I like the idea of a currency tag as I don't have a pound sign on my keyboard. I'd see it as something like: [ currency=GBP ]40[ / currency ]. You could also select the currency you wish it to be formatted into in your profile.

Easy way to tell... All money is worth fuck all, right now...

Not sure if this would work (can't test it), but perhaps:

Then you'd just include "currency.php?amount=50&from=GBP&to=USD". Provided that the script works, that is...

Using google for it probably isn't the best way to do it...
It's never good to rely on other sites in that kind of way.

Well you kind of have to when you want currency values, unless you want to update and store currency data yourself. Which is costly, time consuming and completely redundant for a simple forum. Besides, Google is very reliable.

Yes, Google is reliable, but what if they make the converter better and the source changes? Anyway, you do what you want to do, I'll just watch

I agree with CodersRule that this will probably break eventually. But it's only one line and it's a very minor feature. Just make sure that if or when it breaks it doesn't affect the rest of the page (and maybe even report it to you too).

"costly, time-consuming" : Check, type in, done...

Currencies change every hour, hence time consuming. If you want to "check, type in, done..." every time a currency's value changes, go for it. It is costly if you want some service to automatically update stuff for you, which is what you'll have to do if you don't want to rely on an external website.

I agree with Phoenix. The pound has shifted quite heavily against the Hong Kong dollar since I've been over here. $100 used to be worth a little over 6 pounds, now it's almost 10.

It's like I've been given a pay rise!
