Network Map

A cool feature in vista
Windows Vista has a cool little feature called the Network Map. Through it, you can not only see all the computers in your network, but also how they're all connected to each other. Unfortunately, it didn't have support for XP... until now, sinc they have released an update. Check out my map:



Only downside right now is that there hasn't been an update for Windows Server yet, which is why the computer "Daggoth-DC" is down at the bottom with the computers that can't be displayed. Vision is connected via wireless, so it shows it as being connected on a dotted line and also shows the connection strength. This is a very cool technology, and has a lot of application especially in a large network where the so-called inventory lists that we keep are generally inaccurate and you can never find a computer.

 		That certainly does look cool. But I don't quite understand. Can you get the software for WinXP now?

And I gather the blue box is a switch *grins*, but is the grey one a router? Where can I find more information on this cool thing?

 		That switch is technically built into the back of the router (the gray thing). SchererNet is the name of the wireless network i've set up, and its also the DNS suffix for all the computers. Search for "LLTD" and "Network Map" and i'm sure you can find all the info you need. LLTD is the protocol used by mircosoft for the Network Map.
