The Running Man

progress

I've decided to start a blog to state my progress. So far I have:

programmed the basics of the level editor; several bugs to work out

got the camera for the main game working nicely, still have to do something about the rough movements, though.

eliminated all known bugs for the level editor but later found one with making a 3x3 block; if one was to do it at an edge the'd get a MAV.

first upload.

Made much of the player animation strip (about 10 frame's worth)

Began work on player movement and animation.

Perfected the level editor; I doubt that I will need to improve it any further.

Added a scrolling background to the main game that works nicely. Although I have yet to get it working completely.

second upload.

It is now 4/5/07.

Topic can be viewed here.

download the latest files here.

By 4/7/07 as far as I know, all but one bug have been ironed out of the main game. As of now .lvl files now include information for whether tiles shall be drawn behind or over the player.

Diablos, annoyed by the smalll window size suggests full screen or just a larger window. Making the game full screen made it look great, so I'm keeping the new look.

Spikes added to the tileset on 4/9/07. I took a break to code a tower defense game and I going to work *very* hard programming today (:

Made the ladders nicer, and added ladder climbing animation to player frames.

4/16/07 Found some great royalty free music on my computer - no need no find it online! And it fits the game perfectly!

Also added credits and talked to my buddy about how he came up with the idea.

is there going to be a sequel, Blitz3Dman?

like the Running Man meets Lola.

And they both run and with each other too.

Or perhaps either the Disco Man or the Music Man.
You said you have some really cool
and royalty free music.

Lola... nice princess name, Mousey!

Well, possibly not princess but at least our DiD!
(Damsel in Distress)

And maybe I can make the boss system similar to MegaMan like that...

Yea, good ideas Power Mousey!

I was thinking of the princess from this:

Running man is being, erm, ... postponed, as a result of an outstanding idea for a game that would be fairly easy to code. For anyone who's curious, it's going to be a puzzle-RPG with some action thrown into the mix. The best title I can come up with: Saving Fable

dude,

how about some of these titles?

The Parable of Fable

The Peril: Saving Fable

Perils and Parables: Saving Fable

Like, not Fable as a person, it's a Fable in which SAving occurs if that was confusing

BTW: I'm planning on the main character's name being Aesop

ahhhhhhhh, I see and cool.

The Parables of Aesop.

I like it!

Aesops Parable Party of Adventurers

He is thrown into an arena or a Lions Den
for a crime has unknowingly committed or has
been framed for. He encounters a big, ferocious
lion. Who is hungry and is ready to eat him.
He backs up and with arms and fists ready to defend
himself against the inevitable of having and being dinner
to this lion.
The lion steps on a thorn and roars in pain and limps. Stops and cries and roars more in pain. Aesop feels sorry
and risks being a supple supper delight but turns out with surprise and delight as he helps the lion and pulls the thorn out.
The lion licks Aesop and they become fast friends.
The lion eats one of the guards and they run off
as good friends together.

2 members in the Parable Party, now.

okay...time for a rewrite.

Aesop feeling sorry for the pain, cries and the
suffering of the lion. He gulped and overcame his fears and instinct for survival and slowly approached the lion.
The Lion glared at him but then uttered and moaned
painfully "take it out, pleaseeeeeeee!!, ".
Aesop gulped and plucked the thorn out of the lions paw
and with his powerful beak. The lion relieved of the excruiating pain went up to Aesop while Aesop backed up and closed his eyes. Gobbling out: "eat me fast!! please!
I'd be just a morsel to you'.
The lion taken aback replied: 'huh, no I'm not gonna eat
you. I was...but not now. You saved my life!"
Aesop opened his eyes in astonishment: "huh, what?"
"hey turkey, the name is Larry."

Larry licks a liking to Aesop. He then says to Aesop:
"ummmm...hmmmm you not cooked enough, not even buttered too.
Nah, Larry won't eat you. You saved me! Won't eat you ever!"
"oh thats so good and I'm relieved", Aesop gobbled.

"your name, turkey, if any"
"I'm Aesop"
"Glad to know you. Lets be best buddies. Join up together?"
"um...oh right. Well, yes and happy too and a gobble yes!"

"Aesop, see that guard? Well, I'll pounce on him
and eat him...cause I'm hungry. I'll just chew and
gulp a few vital parts. Express lunch on the go.
And you make haste to the exit or you will be turkey paste"
"Right, Larry. Lets do it bro"

The plan:

(this is not intentional environmentalist propoganda :lol

Tile properties:

Grass
Just average grass, no special properties
Path
Useful if you trust me that it leads you the right way
Water
Can only be traversed by a beaver
Fence
Can only be passed by a rabbit
Cliff
Cannot be passed by anyone but if you find a way to the top, you can't get down it either
Ledge
A smaller clif that unless you're the wolf you can only jump down a ledge, the wolf is able to climb back up
Forest
Only the deer may pass through the forest
Brier patch
Where rabbits like to stay
Old, hollow tree
The perfect home for an owl
Cherry bush
Where deer feast
Wolf's den
The place where wolves make their home
Inhabited tree
Turkeys love to sleep at the base of trees
Dam
Made by beavers as a home

to come:

Open book
Where the owl is used to initiate a puzzle
Pebble
Currency used at Mia's shop to buy items or get a refreshing massage
Seed
Restores turkey energy
Carrot
Restores rabbit energy
Apple
Restores deer energy
Mouse
Restores owl energy; moves around

(The wolf has no special energy restoring item)

All animals have energy which is depleted by exploring and fighting and can be restored by collectingthe items mentioned above which respawn after a time. Returning to where you can switch to the animal you rest which restores all energy. Standing still restores some energy very slowly and gradually and you cannot move or attack while you have no energy.

Character bios:

Aesop, your average wild tukey, decides it's time to put a stop to the people destroying the land.

He must rid of the various hunters, littering teenagers, pollution industries, greedy lumberjacks, and the bosses.

He will meet up with Sarah the rabbit, who can get past fences with ease, Homer the flightless owl, who has an injured wing as a result from wars past but is extremely wise, Alice the deer who has an appetite for berries, can navigate through woods with relative ease but is an extremely poor fighter, Banter the beaver who loves to swim and may cross water, and Samson the wolf, who has an appetite for turkeys, rabbits, and venison but can jump up on ledges without a second thought, but, unfortunately, has a fear of water and cannot cross bridges.

character ratings:

Aesop
-average fighter
-no special abilities
Sarah
-slightly below average fighter
-is able to pass fences
Alice
-very poor fighter
-can navigate through woods
Homer
-very poor fighter
-needed to initiate many puzzles and can speak with the wolf for the player to switch to him
Banter
-slightly above average fighter
-may cross water and can speak to the wolf to switch characters
Samson
-excellent fighter
-is able to jump up ledges but cannot cross bridges because of his fear of water

Bah... Silly environmentalist garbage..

Sounds like a challenge!
... Can you animate all that!
Sunday, 13 May 2007, 06:58
Blitz3Dman
Already have animated overhead characters but I'm rubbish at busts.
|edit| no, I still have to do the beaver. |edit|

The majority of what I have to do is make the story and map now.

Good luck with the map design! I hope it looks as good as it sounds
