Built as an all-in-one super system, the CPC range was affordable, colourful (including the keys if you had a 464!), and even had it's own monitor so you didn't need to use up the family TV.
A single plug was all that was needed to power the lot, and assuming that plug didn't inexplicably start a small fire as you're halfway through a game of Rockstar Ate My Hamster, you were ready to go.
The 664/6128 systems even had a great little 3 inch floppy drive built into them, so not all the games took 5 minutes to load.
Fantastic technology, and with a little yellow flashing cursor that begged for you to start learning it's secrets.
"hmmm.. I wonder what else I can type into here?!"
The CPC had long since moved on, and all the shops had stopped selling games.
The whole country had shifted to the bigger/better Amigas, Atari ST's, Megadrives and Super Nintendos.
At the end of the year, the Playstation was due to pop up, and introduce us all to the wonders of Ridge Racer, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot and Wipeout.
Issue 100 of Amstrad Action hit just the shelves, because, fuck it, people were still buying the bugger!
A giant poll was taken, and it was decided that the Best Game Ever was in fact Elite.
The classic Space Trading game by David Braben saw you floating about from post to post, buying and selling bits and pieces, whilst trying not to get yourself destroyed by all the spacey shooty stuff inbetween.
The result?
Elite was actually given away, for free, slapped on the covertape..
All were joyous.
.. of course, most of the readers at this point, had probably already bought it anyway, considering they were the ones who voted it the best game, but still, nice gesture!
