; Goodnight World

DD helpfully sent me a complete newsletter.
\o/yeay\o/
Thank's DD.
Without a quickly cobbled together chunk of newsletter, there'd be nothing.
I can sleep better, now!

Over to DD, for this week's Socoder Play My Code newsletter.

Jay is complaining again because he doesn't want to write the newsletter (yes, it's Thursday already), so I've hijacked the newsletter.

; Search Code

People wanna search code on PMC, and I think it's an awesome idea, and fully agree. But oh god not Jay's, anything but Jay's code!
(Seriously, having sifted through his code a couple of times, it really isn't that bad, and I've been paid to work on several code bases which I'd consider to be significantly worse).

; Animations

Abdallahbakri asks for help on animations, then Abdallahbakri posts spam and gets himself banned. SD still helps him out though, and you could too!

; Extra

Some stuff happened on this programming forum I sometimes visit, called so-programmer, or something like that. You can find info about that on the (many) side bars.

; Yoda Conditions, Pokemon Exception Handling, and more

Ever wondered what the technical terms were for Jay's coding style? Well now you can find out! Commong names for all of the worst practices, and more, summed up here.

It's based on a question about programming jargon at Stack Overflow.

; Faster Canvas Pixel Manipulation with Typed Arrays

Years ago people started messing with pixels, and to make things faster, the pixels were stored as a single RGBA integer.
Then the HTML5 canvas came along and said "no, you can't do that, all components must be seperate!" and so now you do 4 arrays writes just to update 1 pixel.
Andrew (not Stealth, different Andrew) has worked out how to undo that, and get pixels back to how they should be, which more then doubles performance in Firefox!

; Yamma Hates Scala

Yamma build high performance servers. Yamma switched to Scala for building them. Yamma found Scala too slow, so Yamma e-mailed complaints to the Scala team. Now complaints are leaked, and you can read their critique yourself!

For anyone interested in using Scala, it's an interesting read of real issues they faced during development.

; One of these will kill you...

In Jay's usual positive mood, he has built a game where you will randomly die. It's just picking random numbers when a user clicks, how is that a game?!?!? Strangely compelling, and the music rocks!

; Blocky-Sand

I built this a week ago, but it wasn't in the last newsletter, so here it is now. A blocky sand, like, dragging, painting, watery, editor sandbox thing. Enjoy!

For those playing Skyrim, Bethesda decided there weren't enough bugs in it. So in the latest patch they added backwards flying dragons, crazy!

I love Skyrim, it's awesome, and I love Zero Punctuation too. Yay!

Writing a random newsletter is harder then it looks! There is lots of random googling to be done, asking people for links to stuff they sent you days ago, scratching your head to try and decide if this is right or not to fit, and of course the typing.

But perhaps we could make this a regular thing? Not me, but a different SoCoder memeber each week. Look out for Afr0's MMO-art roundup next week!

Joe.
