Can't vote in today's as I have never seen Red Dwarf, and I like Britcoms (as we call them here).

You've never seen Red Dwarf?!!!?!

To be fair, us Brits are going to be saying the same thing about shows you'll consider to be required viewing, in the days to come!
This is the Top 50 British vs American comedies, in no particular order!

If Last of the Summer Wine is not on the list, I will be sad. Also loved As Time Goes By? The one with Judi Dench in it?

At least I am being honest, do not think it would be right to vote for the USA show without having seen Red Dwarf. Dunno that was ever on free TV over here, pretty limited for free British programming here. Same with today's Back.

Here, the only free TV that British shows are usually on is the local areas PBS station which generally has educational stuff on it. But at certain times of the day will be a couple of Britcoms and on certain nights are the Britmysts (mysteries).

Well I voted for Back even though I never saw it as even a test screen is better than Martin.

Red dwarf, back, martin ?? ... eh what ???

That raymond series i did watched maybe 1 ep ...

voted just to score

Did watch Raymond regularly and enjoyed it, but could not honestly fairly vote not having seen Red Dwarf.

Almost nobody ever watched Martin. It was horrible. Steve Harvey Show was great, but Martin was simply too stupid, but it is based on Martin Lawrence's comedy, which explains why it was so poor.

Good grief, never has a poll been so decisive.
If you like one thing, and have never heard of the other, then vote for the one you know.

These polls aren't exact. We're not being watched by "the powers that be"
You won't suddenly see a TV show getting decommissioned because you didn't vote for it.

What on earth i "Back"? Is "Martin" the series starring Ricky Gervais?

Even us Brits don't know all of these!
Sun, 05 Dec 2021, 08:13
Jayenkai
Back's the recent Mitchell and Webb series. No idea what Martin is. *googles it* Nope, still no idea. Ran for 5 years, though, so must've had something going for it.

The Ricky Gervais one you're thinking of (I think) is probably Derek.

Oh yeah, and Red Dwarf apparently THRIVED on PBS over there, for many a year.
I've definitely seen a couple of PBS adverts, where the crew do their best advertising for a channel they've never heard of
(Were those on the DVDs? I might have to track them down. To be fair, they're probably on YouTube already)

Red Dwarf even had a US Remake attempted, but.. the less said about that, the better.

Not really. It may have thrived on some PBS stations where it was actually shown. PBS is not a TV network like CBS, FOX, etc.

On FOX, I will use that as an example as I know the Simpsons is still on the air. On a TV network like FOX, they usually have affiliates in each market (some owned by FOX and others independently owned and pay a licensing fee to be an affiliate). All FOX stations are pretty much required to show the official FOX shows from 8pm-10pm. Other times of the day, they can for the most part buy and put on what they want, except for the weekend daytime FOX sports programming.

PBS is really different. The station(s) in each market are usually independently owned and are not required to even show PBS programming like Nova. And what each market shows and on which day they show it varies greatly. When we moved to Maryland, the PBS station there, was showing reruns of St Elsewhere (a major network TV show) every night, which is something I have never seen done before or after. Usually they leave major network shows alone.

About the only things PBS stations have in common are the times they show the kids programming, but that has now changed in the digital age, as with the sideband channels, they now usually have a sideband channel that shows kids programming all day. In Maryland, our PBS station showed Britcoms during school hours. In other areas they did not do this and would have cooking, crafts and other things on during those time frames. Not even all PBS stations had the mystery nights, but most did.

Probably was some markets that showed Red Dwarf, ours wasn't one of them when I was watching PBS. I eventually quit watching PBS completely, even though it used to be all I would watch.

Fundraising used to be once a year, then twice. Then each quarter which was getting bad. Then bi monthly and maybe even monthly. Kinda hard to sit through a Red Green episode when the begging for money is adding an extra 60-90 minutes to the episode, begging for several hundred dollars to sell you a DVD set you can buy new on Amazon for $20-$30.

I would say a once a year licensing fee would be ideal only if the government forces the network/stations to work within their budget so the fee would not have to go up.

Otherwise, forget the semblance of not having commercials (they do at the top and bottom of many of the shows) and just be funded by commercials the way every other network is and always has been. Commercials serve a purpose, gives people a chance to take a leak or grab a snack or a drink and not miss anything.

I've not watched either of todays ones myself either, mind you I don't watch TV and haven't for a few years now, so, let's make something up.

Mr. Belvedere
A sitcom about a shape-changing man who ends up in the most hilarious of situations but can only transform into a variety of Bells or Deers, co-starring Bambi Church, uses the catchprase "Oh dear, I've made an utter bell-end of myself". Rating: 4/10 from Bobo's TV News

Friday Night Dinner.
Oh no, it's another Friday night and your boss is coming over to dinner! Involves a whacky family who are put under increasing pressure from the head of households bosses ever changing dietary requirements. Spoilers, he never gets a promotion, just diarrhea. Rating: Poops / Bums from TV Squidly.

Mr Belvedere was a great show. The dad was legendary catcher Bob Uecker, who ended up being a surprisingly good actor. Played great off the "British" butler character Mr. Belvedere. Ran for six seasons, IIRC. Had a lot of dramatic elements for a sitcom. Very good show.

Yeah I won't create a batch of poll questions along the lines of "Favourite Celebrity Paedo" anytime soon

I might consider putting the first round of Cat or Hat on there however, but that's more a Quiz format than opinion poll.

Due to popular demand, and outright hatred of the idea, the US vs UK Sitcom polls have been scrapped.

In their place, I found IceBreakerIdeas.com, and pinched a bunch of A/B questions from This page, and That page.

This should keep us going for the next year.

Back.
After the death of their father, a long-lost, foster brother suddenly pops up.
It's currently on the All Four app in the UK. No idea where/if it may be available on your side of the pond.
There may be alternative methods of access.
