Socoder -> What Have You Done -> What Have You Done? : Sept 2014

Ups

What did you get done this month?
  • One Game...?
  • Bedroom Reorganisation : Start

Did everything turn out as planned?
    The one game did.
The rest is not yet over!!

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Bedroom Reorganisation : Finish

    Why not?
Because, holy crap, are there a ton of cables!!
I no longer have a desk in my bedroom, with the MacMini now sat on one of my shelves, and the PC completely gone. My laptop does all the PC stuffs, so the only "big desk area" I need is that of a keyboard, mouse, MacMini and monitor.
That all fits snuggly on the shelf, so the desk is gone.
However, I've now stumbled upon a secondary issue of "Without a TV, or a PC with a Video Input, I've no way to display any of my consoles and computers..."

Going to have to buy a damn TV, now.. FFS!!

    Now

What are you working on right now?
I should be working on a "Platdude In" game..

    How's that going?
I'm shuffling thousands of bits and pieces around my bedroom, in the hope that, somehow, it looks vaguely presentable!!

What's the plan for the month ahead?
  • So much!!!

I actually wrote about it over on AGameAWeek, yesterday, so if you'd like a more detailed plan of the coming months.. Here's that!

    ---

You can copy+paste the BBCode from the box below, or structure however else you'd like...

    Ups

What did you get done this month?
  • Started a new puzzle game called PixeLink

    Demo here - PixeLink

Use your mouse to link colour & number clues together to form a picture. Double click on paths or painted areas to remove them in the event of an error.

Did everything turn out as planned?

Yes and no. I had to redo the code from scratch at least half a dozen times due to maths issues and bugs. I knew my original version was messy and bloated - the final version is much better. In the end the game came together quicker than I was expecting though.

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • Not as many puzzles done as I expected
  • The puzzle editor could do with more work

    Why not?
Re-coding the game took up more time than I expected.

I also had a heavy cold, which didn't help.

    Now

What are you working on right now?
    Still the puzzle game

    How's that going?
The code is pretty much complete now (I hope)

    Next

What's the plan for the month ahead?
  • Create puzzles
  • Create more puzzles
  • sort it all out for some mobile/tablet type devices...

    Interesting looking game.
Can it auto generate puzzles from art, or do you have to manually create them, because if it can generate them, I can play Mr Doodle for a while!!

The puzzle editor is incredibly simple at the moment and I have to generate the art and clues. Left click places colour, right click places number. I will eventually make it use the path-drawing routine and and auto-count for the numbers.

This game is the reason I needed an image editor that could use a specified palette. I thought using something like that on photos would help me to create puzzles quickly - it doesn't really work though.

    Ups

What did you get done this month?
  • Websites

  • Lots more They Are Everywhere, main game is completed, starting coding in the endings for each ship. The endings are looking to be ~1 minute long now!

  • Got myself a sweet and comfy and fairly NSFW mousemat

Did everything turn out as planned?
Yup, although I lost half a week working in the office thanks to some idiots not delivering my desk

    Downs

    What didn't you get done?
  • See
  • Last
  • Month

    Why not?
    See Last Month

    Now

What are you working on right now?
Finishing off a custom user management system for a whitelabel client
Planning out some sort of multiplayer version of picross in my head

    How's that going?
Okay, if I can churn through the web work I might get some game dev time in on friday which would be lovely.

    Next

What's the plan for the month ahead?
  • Finish and submit They Are Everywhere
  • Get some other games finished off
  • More webs goo.

I forgot to let you know that I really enjoyed TAE - probably because of its slower pace than most shooters. I'd have liked more space to move around in (and the screen to be bigger), but it's a neat original shoot'em-up - and that's not an easy thing to say in this day and age.

BTW What to the "P" capsules actually do? I collected several an noticed no obvious power-up affect.

Cool, thanks for the feedback Rockford

The 'P' capsules increase your score.

**secret** Wait on the main menu for 10 seconds and more is revealed

Keen to see how your puzzler turns out, looks like a colourful mashup of minesweeper and painting by numbers? I'm intregued nonetheless

Crikey, originality? That is quite the compliment, thank youuu! Yeah, it is pretty slow paced at the start, the game is more about defending your immediate area than classic shooters. Having said that, more recent versions have now got the game speed percentage option in there (50 - 250%)

Which level did you reach? The best so far outside myself is my bro who made it to lvl 9 on normal mode.

I think I got upto level 4 or 5 - not too far tbh (by that point it was more about avoiding stuff than shooting it!)- I've never been very good at shooters.

I thought the "P" stood for "Power Up" - not "Points" I did notice they added to your score by doubling - the most I got was 1600.

That's pretty good tbh, I've added an easy mode to the game which should help out, not sure if practice mode was in there but it lets you replay any levels you've reached also
