Helicopter crashy explodey business!

Spent most of the morning rejigging lots of code to allow for multiple helicopters. Obvs, just got three of the same here but this gives the potential to have gunships, transporters or whatever.

Been a bit of a ballache as I never started out with the intention of doing this... a lot of the stuff for controlling hardpoints, targeting, missiles etc was originally a bunch of static references in a handful of separate classes. I dunno why it happened that way, but it did. The upshot was, you'd get in one helicopter, hit the fire button, and missiles would come off the one still on the ground. Every helicopter has its own weapons controller now, as should always have been the case.

On a similar note, I've had to redo the entire audio for the helicopter. I was using Unity AudioMixers before as it allowed me to have low-pass filters etc to adjust the sound as you fly about, but again, that limited me to one helicopter as the same mixer was used for all of them, so adjusting sounds for one helicopter would get immediately over-ridden by the one still on the ground. Mucho ballache. Ditched audio mixers now and just have a single mixer for "SFX" currently, and did all the audio jiggery-pokery in code, the old-fashioned way.

Audio mixers are nice... but just because something is there, it doesn't always make sense to use it for the sake of it.

Nice. Reminds me of... um... an Amiga game I can't remember the name of.

|edit| Jetstrike, and also Apocalypse which I'd forgotten about.

Can't remember Jetstrike, but do recall playing the demo of apocalypse. And it seems I've kind of copied the movement of the Choppa a bit!

Anyway any thoughts of the marketing stuff for your game and it's name?

I have fond memories of Jetstrike, especially as it was written in AMOS, which I used at the time.

No progress with the title yet. Going to start a dev blog somewhere when I get around to it, but I'd really like to get the title sorted before that. I'm going through lists of WW1/2 vehicles, looking for some inspiration. Vehicles were often given individual names - many are rubbish, some are OK. For example; https://sites.google.com/site/landships/home/lists/lists-of-world-war-one-tanks-by-name

Ah AMOS, it really got me into coding for the Amiga, I had AMOS Pro!

Do you have any back story for the game, maybe that could help with the name? Is it USA vs <Insert generic bad guy>, or a lone wolf sort of operation? Maybe a non government agency dealing with the bad guys... or are you the bad guy?

Back story? You talk like I have a design document or something for this, or have done any planning whatsoever!

I'm pretty awkward about it being anything specific. I got a ton of shit on Twitter just for voting for UKIP and Brexit. If I made a game about the US bombing the shit out of Kim Jong-un (for example), the anti-Trump brigade would want me strung up from the nearest lamp post. I'd have to get a flat-share with Salman Rushdie. That wouldn't do at all.

I quite liked the premise of US Gold's "Infiltrator", as it was just a straightforward "good guy (Infiltrator) vs madman (Overlord)" affair. You didn't really care who/why/where it was all happening. It just was.

I had Infiltrator on the CPC. I don't recall ever landing the damned helicopter; I kept crashing it IIRC!

Mine auto-lands (with a button press) when you're over something you can land on, so no worries there.

NAME IDEA!

"Rotorhead" - Air Force slang for a helicopter pilot.

The rotorhead is also the spinny bit that the rotor blades attach to.

Yeah Rotorhead could work! May need a sub title too:

* Rotorhead: Strike
* Rotorhead: Attack
* Rotorhead: Operation
* Attack of the Rotorhead
* Rotorhead: Mission One (hint of a sequel )
* Rotorhead: <Name of chopper>
