Are you planning to put it back together again at the end or are you doing a Spinal?

Was it borked to begin with?

Well, what happened was I was playing F1 2017 last night, and you use the right analog stick to look around. So I was overtaking a car, and looked to my left to see if I'd got past far enough to cut him off... let go of the stick, and I'm still looking left! Looks down and the analog stick is stuck! Meanwhile I total my car due to not looking where I'm going. Seems that if I push the stick left, it's fine, but if I push it left and up a bit, which I must've done, it gets stuck in that position. It also has a bit of a "gritty" feel, like there's something stuck in there.

Had it apart now anyway - very simple to disassemble as it turns out, give it a spray of the auld switch cleaner, wiggled it about a bit, all seems to be working perfectly again.

Can only assume a bit of fluff or something that it didn't like had found it's way into the switch.

Saved myself £50 by not having to replace it. Makes you wonder if they manufacture these things to have a finite working life...

|edit| but saying that, the left stick is used a LOT more, so if anything you'd expect that to crap out first...

To prevent it recurring, a bit of Li-Moly or silicone grease on any moving parts will help. Those types of greases won't coagulate.

|edit| Just a thin smear though, or the clinginess might cause delayed centre return. |edit|

I find things like that just make the problem worse as over time, more and more stuff sticks to the grease and when the time comes it'll be a right bitch to get clean again.

Same when I see people using WD40 to "oil" door hinges, then wonder why the whole thing has gone black six months later. That stuff just sits there and collects filth. Switch cleaner is like IPA (but milder) - it just evaporates off and leaves nothing behind.

Was it the pot that got stuck or was it between thumbstick and casing?.

Not sure - once I'd got it apart and took the stick part off, the switch itself seemed fine. But not wanting to have wasted my time I just cleaned it up anyway, and put it back together.

One of my mate's 360 controllers got stuck once. I took that apart, found that the pot had got stiff. I did the switch cleaner thing and then applied a small amount of Li-Moly grease, the controller lasted more than the life of the console. I agree with you that it could build up with dirt though, so best not to put any between thumbstick and casing.
