Windows Wallpapers Q - With XP, it couldnt set a JPG as a desktop wallpaper and it actually created a BMP file... Win10 supports JPG.... now when did that happen? Win7? I'm using SystemParametersInfo(20, 0, file, 1) and just want to ensure that it works with a JPG

Not entirely sure!
But my old desktop images folder seems to suggests some time between 2004 and 2007.
2004, I obviously had to convert a jpg to a bmp, but by 2007 I seem to have been using jpg/pngs quite happily.

I'm trying to boot up an old laptop that I thought had Win7 on it... but it's a broken install of Win8!

Doing a format and trying to reinstall Win8 as I cant find my Win7 disc!

The funny thing with WinXP, is that you can select a JPG, but in the background it would convert it to BMP.

If you are wondering, we are onto the final testing of our Jigsaw game, and one of my tests is running on an old (13+years) Celeron (with an Intel onboard GPU) desktop, once you compete a puzzle I've got the feature of letting the player set the photo as the wallpaper... and it didnt work on Windows XP!

And BlitzMax doesnt have an inbuilt command to convert an image to BMP, a (not so) "quick" Google I found a some code (Simon Armstrong's BPaint), now I check to see if the game is running on XP, convert it to BMP then run the command, all good!

Oh, man!!
Just imagine all the crazy stuff we've forgotten over the years!
All these things that we've come to expect from systems, but.. they just weren't there.

Back in the day, it used to be quicker to load a BMP than a JPG, due to the decompression. It wasn't until the JPG routines got built into the CPUs that the speed of loading JPGs became a moot point.

Apologies, got sidetracked with sewing last night but, found somenthing that indicates win 7 will transcode it over to a jpg

@Brice, maybe that's why MS did it for XP for performance reasons.... I do recall something about active desktop too.

No worries @rychan, over on the bomb Henri tested on Win7 using the same command I am using and he has confirmed it works with a JPG.

Now... does anyone want to test Vista for me

Active Desktop got removed because it was using IE, and IE was so full of security holes that even Microsoft couldn't run the risk of using it!

Would be nice to see them retry it nowadays.
I did like having an LCars desktop made from URLs!
