Socoder -> Off Topic -> Vive's Cost

HTC Vive to cost $799USD... not too bad I was expecting over $1000: Linkage

Hell of a lot of competition coming through in the VR market. Good for consumers cos it means lower prices.

Rift is the goggles.. Does it still come with a camera? I know one of the DK's used a camera for positional tracking..
Hmm..?

Vive is the goggles, 2 handsets and 2 of the positional tracking "Lighthouse" things.
IMO, although it's more costly, Vive seems vaguely better suited.
..

Of course, I'm getting none of 'em, because I'm not a fucking mentalist!!!
Yesterday I ordered a Google Cardboard from Amazon, and it arrived earlier today.
I spent a good 10 minutes with it, realised it's many flaws, and that it's not exactly suitable for someone in my condition, and have already given up with the bloody thing.
Bah, humbug.

Yeah Rift does use an external camera for tracking.

Your experience with Cardboard shouldnt stop you trying the Rift or Vive, Cardboard is really bad compared to the Rift (and I guess the Vive).

Moocho moolah

I could strap 2 4K tvs to my head for that price and look less stupid!

I still maintain that this VR thing is a passing fad, and any headset is going to spend most of the rest of its life gathering dust in a cupboard.

Just like 3D TV which seems to have died a death. Again.

My thoughts exactly.

@Gfk and Rockford... have you tried any of the headsets? Its really hard to describe the feeling to anyone who hasnt used one.

and any headset is going to spend most of the rest of its life gathering dust in a cupboard.

Dave, I know you like F1... try to imagine playing it with a headset (and steering wheel), you will nearly feel that you are there!

I'll be using the HMDs for sim games, such as driving (Dirt Rally), flight (IL-2 Sturmovik) and space games (eg Elite). I've used the Rift DK1 and it is amazing!

I'm going to wait for the reviews to see which is HMD is better in terms of value, then I'll need to build a new PC (current one is around 6 years old).

No, I haven't tried one - I *can* see the appeal, sort of, for using it for racing games. But I don't even like wearing headphones because they make me feel disconnected from the real world and I don't like not being fully aware of my surroundings. The whole experience for me, with a VR headset, would be even worse.

I would love to make a racing game with that and connect it up additionally to some speed adjustable fans, for added realism.

Well thats kind of the whole point of VR, is to be immerse yourself in the game.

Maybe you will change your mind if you get to try it

*ahem*

All whats missing is the HMD

I get enough immersion from the few games I do play, without bolting on loads of extra tech. I'm happy with a 3DS with the 3D off!

I do like the idea and I wouldn't say no if it was offered to me, but I would never spend more on a peripheral than I would a pc. I'm not really a p gamer, so my lappy suits me fine. It's underspecced (just) and supposedly can't run the Rift and I'm not bothered. My next lappy is likely to fit the needs and the price will have come down or the whole thing will fall flat on its face.

I know that for me any VR tech would indeed sit in a cupboard gathering dust (even though I'd probably love the expeerience) as I just don't get the time I used to do anything, let alone game.

At the end of the day, I got a huge amount of play out of WiiSports.
Give me that, in VR, with all four players all playing in the one room together, and I'll let you call VR a success.
Basically, I want the bloody holodeck, and if I ain't getting a holodeck, then the WiiMote was more than enough..

Fwiw, I attempted the following.
1. Get Google Cardboard.

2. Find a 3D VR "walker" for my iPod Touch.. That is, something which works with the goggles, but automatically moves forward at a leisurely walking pace.
I assumed that SOMEWHERE there would be a StreetView that does this, but all require button pushes to move, and the iPod Touch doesn't have a compass, and is therefore incompatible with the Cardboard's button.

3. Fit goggles to face, start Treadmill, GO...

#2 was the fail point of my experiment.
I can "start a video, then cram the iPod into the cardboard", but finding a nice long lengthy walker video is difficult, not to mention the fact that the iPod edition of YouTube doesn't yet have 360+Cardboard support.

Oh, and I know the difference between "cheap cardboard" vs "expensive VR", but keep in mind that I'm running a shitty cheapo laptop.
You're talking £10 vs about £2,000 once you include a half-decent PC to run it!!
