Only female comedian I've ever found funny. The likes of Shapi Korsandi and all the others you only ever see on Mock the Week, aren't fit to shine Victoria Wood's shoes.

Of course there really are lots of female comedians that I could mention, stand-ups such as Sarah Millican, Jo Brand, Pauline McLynn, Sandi Toksvig, Jenni Eclair, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie Odonnell etc. Then there are the drama and sit-com femmes such as Dawn French (& Saunders), Catherine Tate, Kathy Burke etc. to name just a few.

There really are hundreds, the problem is, they don't always spring to mind, octen due to lack of exposure (ooh err!!).

Most of the ones you've mentioned have trouble trying to be funny without swearing like a sailor. I've never heard of Pauline McLynn.

They aren't in the same ballpark as Victoria Wood.

Pauline McLynn = Mrs Doyle.
She's also in about a dozen episodes of Just a Minute, too! hurray!

Well, some of them swear, but so do some/most of the best male comedians, and they are ALL funny without swearing.

Craig Charles, Billy Connelly, Frank skinner, Frankie Boyle etc. all swear like troopers; it doesn't stop them being funny. I don't class a comedian bad just because they swear - male or female.

Yeah, you can have comdey giants without swearing, but I wouldn't discount a comedian just because they swear. If you don't like it, that's fine, but it still doesn't make them not funny to those that do. Comedy, like everything else, is subjective.

As for Mrs Doyle, go on. Go on, go on. Goooo oooon!!!

I didn't say any of that.

Simply pointing out that Victoria Wood managed to be funny without the colourful language.

Whatever.

Simply pointing out that Victoria Wood managed to be funny without the colourful language.

Yes, she did. But that's irrelevant.

They aren't in the same ball park

Was that edited in later? Hmmm...

And no, they are not. That's the point with good comedians - they all find their OWN ballpark.

At the end of the day, it's less about there "not being any" and more about the fact that we just don't get to see them.

Pram Ayres is a great example of this. Did you know.. She has her own annual 4-episode sketch/poetry series on BBC Radio Four?
Bet you didn't!
Susan Calman's just finished her third series on there.
And recently there's been a fantastic sitcom called "To Hull and Back", which was great.

But, DAMN, you really have to hunt this shit down!!!
Meanwhile, male comedians get near-nightly exposure on panel shows, stand up shows and more.

It's not about them not being there, or even that they're not any good.
It's all about the fact that, traditionally, we just don't get them on telly.

And that sucks.

Pam Ayres! That's a name I've not seen in a long time. I don't have chance to listen to the radio anymore, other than while driving to/from work.

Yeah, exactly as I said, it's a serious lack of exposure and yes, it really does suck.

TBH, despite the number of channels on tv devoted to comedy, there is a real lack of actual stand up.

When I was growing up, with just the three or four channels, we seemed to have an awful lot more late night stand-up comedy - peeps like Jim Davison, Dave Allen, Jimmy Jones, Frank Carson, Jimmy Tarbuck, Bob Monkhouse etc. etc.

Then there were the Americans too, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy etc.

Nowadays, we get pretty much just the one stand up show, the name of which escapes me right now (Jack Dee's used to introduce the show and it has the name in lights behind the comic) or Michael MacIntyre. Strange world.
